You know what? The Cambrian Lodge Motel surprised me in the best way possible. I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 63 Hamilton Road, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3.5-star place. But there’s something genuinely welcoming about this spot that those sterile chain hotels just can’t replicate. The building itself has that classic Kiwi motel charm – clean lines, well-maintained grounds, and honestly, the kind of place where you can actually park right outside your room without circling the block three times like you do in central Auckland.

What really won me over was how the owners clearly get what travelers actually need. The rooms are spacious enough that you’re not bumping into your suitcase every time you move around, and – this might sound small but it matters – the WiFi actually works properly throughout the property. I’ve stayed at fancier places where you’re fighting for a signal two steps from the router. The beds are comfortable too, none of that rock-hard mattress nonsense some budget places try to pass off. Cambridge itself is one of those towns that feels properly lived-in rather than touristy, which I love. You’re close enough to Hamilton if you need city amenities (it’s maybe a 20-minute drive), but far enough out that you wake up to birds instead of traffic. There’s a decent café just down Hamilton Road where locals actually go for their morning coffee – always a good sign.

I mean, it’s not trying to be something it’s not, and that’s refreshing. The staff genuinely seem to care about whether you’re sorted, not just going through the motions of hospitality. Check-in was smooth, they knew the area well enough to give proper recommendations, and when I had a question about late checkout, they were flexible without making it feel like a huge favor. The 8.2 rating makes complete sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place that does the fundamentals really well without unnecessary frills. Perfect if you’re exploring the Waikato region and want somewhere reliable to come back to at the end of the day, or honestly, if you just need a comfortable base that won’t eat your entire travel budget. Cambridge has that lovely small-town feel where you can walk around in the evening without any stress, and the Cambrian Lodge fits right into that vibe.
