Waitapu Springs B&B

50 Waitapu Road, 7110 Takaka, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Waitapu Springs B&B – I mean, it’s tucked away on this quiet stretch of Waitapu Road, and from the outside it looks like just another cozy New Zealand farmhouse. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you from the get-go. The gravel driveway crunches under your tires as you arrive, and there’s this immediate sense of… well, peace, I guess. You’re only about ten minutes from Takaka’s main strip, but it feels like you’ve driven into a completely different world.
What really gets me about this place is how the owners actually live here – you can tell because there are all these genuine touches that fancy hotels just can’t fake. The breakfast (and trust me, don’t skip it) features eggs from their own chickens, and I swear the bread was still warm when they brought it out. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully set up with these lovely views over the property, and the beds are properly comfortable – not too soft, not too firm. I stayed in late March, which is honestly perfect timing because you get that gorgeous autumn light filtering through the windows in the morning, and the temperature’s just right for sitting outside with your coffee. There’s free parking right there, which might not sound like much, but anyone who’s driven around Golden Bay knows that’s actually a blessing.
The thing that really sold me on Waitapu Springs, though, is the location itself. You’re perfectly positioned to explore Abel Tasman – it’s about a 20-minute drive to Pohara Beach, where most people launch their kayaking adventures. But here’s the local secret: you’re also super close to Te Waikoropupu Springs, which are absolutely magical and way less crowded than the main tourist spots. The hosts gave me directions to this little walking track that connects to the springs, and I had the whole place practically to myself around sunset. Plus, if you’re planning to hit up the Saturday market in Takaka (which you absolutely should), you can actually walk there if you don’t mind a pleasant 15-minute stroll along quiet country roads. The whole Golden Bay area gets pretty busy during summer holidays, but staying slightly out of town like this means you get the best of both worlds – easy access to everything, but you come home to actual tranquility. With a 9.7 rating, I expected it to be good, but this place genuinely feels like staying with friends who happen to live in paradise.

The many surprises you find as you walk through the unassuming front entrance and discover the warmth of the home and the hosts! Many more lovely surprises await ...
What could be improved: Well, the weather wasn't great the night we arrived, but that improved 1000% and showed clearly what a great place we'd chosen.
