Downtown Townhouse Special

11 Brickfield Way Auckland Central, 1010 Auckland, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Downtown Townhouse Special on Brickfield Way, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior. It’s tucked into this quiet little street that most tourists probably walk right past, which actually turned out to be one of its biggest advantages. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Queen Street’s chaos, but at night? Dead quiet. No drunk backpackers stumbling around at 2am like you get at some of the hostels closer to the main drag.
The thing that really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Auckland character without feeling dated. I mean, a lot of these older buildings in the central city have been renovated to death, but this place still has some soul to it. The rooms aren’t huge – you know how it is with these converted townhouses – but everything’s been thought through properly. Actually decent water pressure in the shower (trust me, this matters more than you think in Auckland), and the beds are legitimately comfortable, not just “travel comfortable.” There’s this great little courtyard area that catches the morning sun perfectly if you’re an early coffee person, and honestly, it feels more like staying at a well-designed friend’s place than a hotel.
What really sold me on this spot was the location knowledge the staff had. When I asked about getting to Ponsonby for dinner, instead of just pointing me toward a taxi, they told me about the walking route through Myers Park that cuts about ten minutes off the journey and gives you those killer harbor views from the top. Little things like that make such a difference when you’re trying to get a feel for a city. The 9.6 rating isn’t just people being generous either – I’ve stayed at plenty of places with fancier lobbies and higher star ratings that felt way more generic than this. Sure, if you need a concierge service or room service until midnight, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want somewhere that feels authentically Auckland, where you can actually sleep peacefully but still walk to basically everything worth seeing in the city center, it’s pretty much perfect. Plus, and this is crucial if you’re driving, they actually have sorted parking – which in this part of town is basically like finding gold.

Lovely furnishings and very well equipped apartment. Great location within easy walking distance to Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Basin, and a supermarket just a couple of minutes walk away. But set back from the road and very quiet.
What could be improved: No aircon so can get very hot.
Tonia from New Zealand (6 April 2025)
Great place to stay and would definitely recommend. It had everything you could possibly want and was very comfortable.

Stunning house for our stay. Very clear instructions to gain entry to the property and the garage. Home was spotless and larger than expected. It had all the amenities we needed including a washing machine & dryer. Very close to the waterfront and a short walk into the city. We could have asked for a better place to stay to end our 8 week trip.
Hayley from United Kingdom (16 February 2025)
Very clean, great location. We had a very early flight into Auckland but were able to check in early which was greatly apricated as it gave us a full day there. We loved the apartment which was on 2 levels.

Near Victoria Park where I could run. Easy walk
to down town and marina. Safe underground parking once we had the info. Spotless and spacious.
What could be improved: Nothing to not like. Some communications could be better but an outstanding place.
Sarah from New Zealand (14 November 2024)
Nice quiet location but still very central to everything. Nice large supermarket a 2 min walk away and Ponsonby cafes and shops a short drive
Leanne from Australia (11 September 2024)
A lovely clean & well decorated townhouse in a quiet walkable location. Loved the super comfy mattress & bedding with electric blankets, which was definitely appreciated. Had everything we needed for our weekend stay. Would definitely book again if in Auckland. What could be improved: Probably the stairs, if anything, they felt a little steep. We...

Spacious and clean
Inner city location with everything in easy walking distance
The recreation centre was a nice surprise
The hosts responded promptly when we had an issue with the garage remote
What could be improved: We weren't expecting a lot of steps which were somewhat difficult to negotiate with a lot of luggage
