When you’re driving down Cron Street (which honestly isn’t much more than a quiet residential road), you almost miss it because the building sort of disappears into the native bush. I mean, Franz Josef isn’t exactly a sprawling metropolis, but this place feels like you’ve stepped away from even the small-town bustle. The whole property has this elevated, almost treehouse vibe that makes you feel like you’re sleeping in the canopy, which is pretty magical when you wake up to birdsong instead of traffic.

What really sets this place apart – and I’ve stayed at a bunch of places around the glacier region – is how they’ve managed to balance that wilderness feeling with actual comfort. The rooms are genuinely well-appointed (not just “nice for a small town” but actually nice), and you can tell they’ve put thought into the details. The beds are proper quality, the bathrooms have decent water pressure, and there’s this sense that someone who actually travels designed the space. Plus, the staff actually knows the area – they’ll tell you which helicopter tour operators are worth it and which glacier walks to skip depending on the weather, not just hand you a generic brochure. Parking’s easy too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling all your tramping gear around.

Here’s the thing about staying in Franz Josef – you’re either going to love the fact that you’re literally in the middle of nowhere surrounded by incredible scenery, or you’re going to feel a bit claustrophobic. The Treetops definitely leans into the wilderness aspect, but in a good way. The location on Cron Street means you’re a five-minute walk from the main strip (such as it is), but you feel completely removed from it all. I actually found myself sitting on the deck in the evenings just listening to the forest sounds, which isn’t something I’d normally do – but there’s something about being up in those trees that makes you slow down a bit. Fair warning though: if you’re here during peak season (December-February), book way ahead because this place fills up fast, and honestly, there aren’t that many quality options in Franz Josef. The 8.9 rating isn’t just inflated review scores – it’s because they’ve figured out how to do mountain accommodation right without making you feel like you’re roughing it.
