Montrose Estate

592 Blackford Road, Rakaia Gorge RD12 , 7782 Mount Hutt, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Montrose Estate on Blackford Road – I mean, you’re basically driving into what feels like the middle of nowhere near Mount Hutt. But then you round that last bend and suddenly there’s this gorgeous property that looks like it belongs in a fancy travel magazine, except it’s real and you’re actually staying there.
The thing about this place is that it gets the luxury stuff right without being pretentious about it. You know how some five-star places make you feel like you need to whisper? Not here. The staff are genuinely friendly (like, actual Kiwi friendly, not fake hotel friendly), and when they tell you about the best spots to hit the slopes or where to grab coffee in Methven, they actually know what they’re talking about. The rooms are spacious – I’m talking proper space to spread out your ski gear without tripping over everything – and the beds are the kind where you sink in just enough that you don’t want to get up for your 7 AM ski lesson. The views toward the Southern Alps are pretty spectacular, especially if you snag one of the rooms facing west. You’ll catch the sunset hitting the mountains, and honestly, it’s one of those moments where you just stop scrolling your phone and actually look.
What really sold me on Montrose Estate though is how well they understand their location. They’re not trying to be a city hotel dropped in the countryside – they lean into being your base camp for the Canterbury region. The concierge actually skis (crazy concept, right?) and can tell you which runs are good on a powder day versus when it’s been scraped down to ice. Parking is easy and free, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with ski boots and gear. The restaurant sources a lot locally, and I mean properly local – not just “New Zealand lamb” but actually from farms you could drive to if you wanted. Breakfast runs until a reasonable hour because they get that you’re not here for business meetings at 6 AM. And here’s a small thing that matters: the WiFi actually works throughout the property, so you can post those mountain photos without hunting for a signal. The only minor downside? It books up fast during ski season, so you can’t really decide last minute to extend your stay. But honestly, with a 9.9 rating, that’s probably not surprising. If you’re planning to explore Mount Hutt or just want a proper retreat that doesn’t feel like you’re roughing it, this place gets it right.

we stayed here for my husband's birthday with our 2 teenage children. It was exceptional and we all loved it. The accommodation made it a really special weekend. The scenery and location are both stunning.

The most tranquil, sublime mountain setting imaginable. You can watch pairs of geese from your window glide across your private lake. Our kids loved kayaking on the lake, the hot tub, log fires, the steam shower, walking to the river, tobogganing at Mt Hutt, the local hot springs… we did too. What’s not to love. Robert's greeting and service was exceptional. The views were one of a kind. This home was very cozy. Kids enjoyed the piano and kayaking. After a day snowboarding the hot tub and heated beds came in handy. The seclusion was great and the clear skies and stars were memorable. The home was very clean and worth every penny. We would really...

The house was lovely - the bedrooms and ensuites were extremely spacious and comfortable and the views were amazing. The showers and jet bath tub were very luxurious and the hot tub outside also so. What could be improved: The kitchen was really well appointed with everything needed to cook (except no cooking oil) and while there was a kettle and...

What could be improved: When we arrived the place was cold; I recommend that management makes sure to heat up the place before guests arrive
