Absolute Lakefront House

173 Lake Terrace, 3330 Taupo, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I’ve stayed at a lot of lakefront places around New Zealand, but Absolute Lakefront House on Lake Terrace actually lives up to its name – and that’s saying something, because usually when hotels put “lakefront” in the title, you end up squinting through trees to catch a glimpse of water. Not here. You’re literally right on Lake Taupo, like the kind of close where you could probably cast a fishing line from the property.
The thing about this place is it feels more like staying at someone’s really nice holiday home than a typical hotel, which I mean in the best possible way. You know how some accommodations try too hard to be fancy? This one just gets it right – comfortable without being stuffy, well-appointed without making you afraid to touch anything. The location on Lake Terrace puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk into Taupo town center (maybe 10 minutes if you’re not in a hurry), but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds or the boy racers doing laps on Friday nights. I actually appreciated that they have proper parking sorted – you’d be surprised how many lakefront places assume you’ll just figure it out on the street.
What really won me over was waking up to that view every morning. Lake Taupo changes personality throughout the day, and from this spot you get the full show – early morning mist, afternoon sun turning everything golden, evening reflections. The house itself has this laid-back vibe that works perfectly with the setting. There’s decent Wi-Fi if you need to check emails or whatever, but honestly, you’ll probably find yourself spending more time just watching the lake do its thing. The whole setup makes you want to grab a coffee and sit outside, even in cooler weather. I visited in shoulder season (April) and it was pretty quiet – I imagine summer gets busier, but the property feels spacious enough that you wouldn’t feel cramped. One small thing – the hot water was excellent, which might sound random, but after a day of exploring around Taupo or doing the Tongariro crossing, a proper hot shower is basically heaven. The 4-star rating feels spot-on; it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works well and the location is genuinely special. If you’re the type who books accommodation just to have somewhere to sleep, this might be overkill, but if you actually want to enjoy where you’re staying – especially that lake access – it’s pretty hard to beat.

Clean, facilities and location
What could be improved: It was hard to carry bags and our belongings because of steep stairs
Reece from New Zealand (6 October 2024)
Amazing location but no good for elderly people who are not very mobile or people with walking disabilities (units 3 and 4 are at car park level ) . The steps were too steep to the front units 1 and 2 . Amazing place but I think it’s an Achilles heal especially if it’s raining .
Sue-anne from New Zealand (28 July 2024)

Jade from New Zealand (7 June 2024)
Amazing location and beautiful property
What could be improved: Just need to be aware that there are a number of stairs from the carpark
Edouard from Indonesia (12 January 2025)
The modern and new building. The position is 2 steps from the lake edge. The big glass windows means you get the full view of the lake taupo. What could be improved: The BBQ hadn't been cleaned for our stay. Getting to unit 1 and 2 there are steps down from the main road. Not easy with full size suitcases and bags going down.
