You know what struck me first about Abad Green Forest? It’s literally right across from the RC Church at Thekkady Junction – and I mean literally, you can hear the morning bells if you’re an early riser. But honestly, that’s part of its charm. You’re staying right in the heart of Kumily town, which means you can actually walk to the spice shops and local eateries instead of being stuck in some isolated resort bubble.
The place has this unpretentious vibe that I really appreciated. It’s a solid 3-star that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, but the 8.4 rating makes total sense once you settle in. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but the AC works well (crucial during those humid Thekkady afternoons), and the beds are actually decent. What I loved was stepping out onto the balcony in the evening and watching the town wind down. You get glimpses of the forest canopy beyond the buildings, which reminds you why you came to this part of Kerala in the first place. The staff knows the area inside and out – they’ll tell you which spice plantation tours are worth your time and which ones are tourist traps, plus they can arrange jeep safaris to Periyar without the usual markup you get from street vendors.
Location-wise, you’re maybe a 10-minute walk to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary entrance, but more importantly, you’re surrounded by authentic local life. There’s this little tea shop just down the road where the auto drivers hang out – great place for morning chai and to overhear gossip about elephant sightings. The parking situation is pretty straightforward, which is a relief if you’re driving up those winding mountain roads. Nights are pleasantly quiet despite being in town – well, except for the occasional temple festivities, but those are part of the experience, right? I’d definitely recommend this place if you want to experience Thekkady like someone who actually lives here, rather than just passing through on a tour bus. The price point is fair, the location is genuinely convenient for both wildlife activities and cultural immersion, and honestly, the whole setup just feels more real than those sprawling resorts that could be anywhere.

The room is of a good size for 2 ppl. The pool is very good and well maintained. Dinner and breakfast was good. They were very kind to make modifications to the menu items as requested. I wish they offered more fruit options for breakfast, but most hotels don't even offer fruits in the first place, so this is a win for sure! There are many shops...

A lovely stay close to town We were able to walk to a cultural show and dinner, both close by. The tiger reserve trek was also nearby and excellent.
