Abstract Hotel Overview

You know what struck me first about the Abstract Hotel? It’s actually tucked into this perfect spot on Upper Queen Street where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist chaos. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the main Queen Street shopping strip, but it feels like you’ve stepped into this quieter pocket of the city that most visitors miss.

The lobby has this understated modern vibe – not trying too hard to be trendy, if that makes sense. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful without being overly scripted, which I appreciated after dealing with some of those cookie-cutter hotel experiences elsewhere. My room on the fifth floor had these floor-to-ceiling windows that gave me this unexpected view of the harbor in the distance (though honestly, you have to crane your neck a bit). The design is clean and functional – think Scandinavian minimalism meets Auckland sensibility. The bed was actually comfortable, not just hotel-brochure comfortable, and the shower pressure was solid. Small thing, but the blackout curtains really work, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag.

What I really liked was how it sits right in that sweet spot for exploring Auckland on foot. You can walk to Britomart in about ten minutes, hit up the waterfront without breaking a sweat, and there’s this fantastic little coffee place – Remedy Coffee – just around the corner that locals actually go to. The hotel doesn’t have parking on-site, which might be a pain if you’re driving, but honestly, you don’t need a car from this location. The area gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, so if you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll want to head down toward the Viaduct or Ponsonby (both totally doable). One thing worth noting – the street can get a bit busy during morning rush hour, but the windows do a decent job keeping the noise out. The 8.2 rating feels about right to me; it’s a solid choice that delivers what it promises without any major surprises, good or bad. Perfect for someone who wants a comfortable base to explore Auckland without paying those premium waterfront hotel prices.

Comfy and cool, with excellent amenities and a hip vibe. The room was bigger than I had expected, and was adequately appointed. Comfy bed and nice clean bathroom. Wish we'd had more time to enjoy the library lounge, terrace bar and wintergarden....

Comfy and cool, with excellent amenities and a hip vibe. The room was bigger than I had expected, and was adequately appointed. Comfy bed and nice clean bathroom. Wish we'd had more time to enjoy the library lounge, terrace bar and wintergarden. Breakfast was good and the location handy to many eateries on Karangahape Road. Reception sweets were a nice wee touch. Great art!

What could be improved: Nothing. Solid stay, will return.

Beds were very comfortable and the breakfast was fantastic. The room was very quiet and the blackout curtains were great. Lots of storage space and good size bathroom, kitchen etc. We loved the bar and the lounge area and thought the location was great

What could be improved: The pillows were a bit soft for us, and the water pressure in the shower was not great. We thought it a bit unusual that there was no phone in the room to contact reception. Staff were all very polite and helpful but communication between them from one shift to the next was poor - they had no idea that we'd paid for breakfast the first morning or that we were staying two nights. They seemed very confused about that.

Love the vibe! Close to central city. Loved the large fridge and dedicated freezer. Microwave was a great bonus. Great friendly staff. Definitely stay again…. What could be improved: Nothing I didn’t like in general just comments…. Sound travels...

What could be improved: Nothing I didn’t like in general just comments…. Sound travels between rooms…. Lighting for business travellers needing to work in the evening required moving furniture around, no lights over table area. Was a little confused on arrival where checkin was. I struggled with parking, tried to locate where I might park to see reception before I parked, and gave up and Just parked in Wilson’s park. A short walk to hotel is fine. But then found out I needed to park up in the one way/reverse out park to get the voucher for token from reception first. This does not make for ease of arrival. If I was travelling with someone else, it wouldn’t be a problem, by myself a challenge

It was a very easy place to stay. I liked the cleanliness - although found a dead mosquito in otherwise clean sheets - and ease of it. What could be improved: It was slightly noisy outside my window - possibly people partying at the cemetery next...
