Abstract Hotel

8 Upper Queen Street, 1010 Auckland, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about the Abstract Hotel? It’s actually tucked into this perfect spot on Upper Queen Street where you’re close enough to everything but not drowning in tourist chaos. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the main Queen Street shopping strip, but it feels like you’ve stepped into this quieter pocket of the city that most visitors miss.
The lobby has this understated modern vibe – not trying too hard to be trendy, if that makes sense. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful without being overly scripted, which I appreciated after dealing with some of those cookie-cutter hotel experiences elsewhere. My room on the fifth floor had these floor-to-ceiling windows that gave me this unexpected view of the harbor in the distance (though honestly, you have to crane your neck a bit). The design is clean and functional – think Scandinavian minimalism meets Auckland sensibility. The bed was actually comfortable, not just hotel-brochure comfortable, and the shower pressure was solid. Small thing, but the blackout curtains really work, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag.
What I really liked was how it sits right in that sweet spot for exploring Auckland on foot. You can walk to Britomart in about ten minutes, hit up the waterfront without breaking a sweat, and there’s this fantastic little coffee place – Remedy Coffee – just around the corner that locals actually go to. The hotel doesn’t have parking on-site, which might be a pain if you’re driving, but honestly, you don’t need a car from this location. The area gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, so if you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll want to head down toward the Viaduct or Ponsonby (both totally doable). One thing worth noting – the street can get a bit busy during morning rush hour, but the windows do a decent job keeping the noise out. The 8.2 rating feels about right to me; it’s a solid choice that delivers what it promises without any major surprises, good or bad. Perfect for someone who wants a comfortable base to explore Auckland without paying those premium waterfront hotel prices.

Comfy and cool, with excellent amenities and a hip vibe. The room was bigger than I had expected, and was adequately appointed. Comfy bed and nice clean bathroom. It was a very easy place to stay. I liked the cleanliness - although found a dead mosquito in otherwise clean sheets - and ease of it.
What could be improved: It was slightly noisy outside my window - possibly people partying at the cemetery next door?!
Andrew from United Kingdom (6 June 2025)

What could be improved: Nothing.

Location, decor, friendly staff and cool arty vibe. Just round the corner from Pit street theatre.

Also suggest the breakfast includes basic eggs on toast.
