The location on Cardrona Valley Road feels a bit removed from the main Wanaka action at first glance, but you know what? That actually turned out to be one of its biggest strengths. You’re literally sitting in this sweet spot where you can see the mountains from pretty much every angle, and the whole Cardrona Valley stretches out in front of you like something from a postcard.

The property itself has that clean, modern resort vibe – think spacious apartments rather than cramped hotel rooms. I mean, these aren’t your typical cookie-cutter accommodations. The units I stayed in had full kitchens (which honestly saved me a fortune, considering Wanaka’s restaurant prices), and the balconies… well, let’s just say I spent way more time out there with my morning coffee than I’d planned. The furnishings feel quality without being stuffy – sort of that contemporary mountain lodge aesthetic that doesn’t try too hard. What really got me was the attention to practical details: proper blackout curtains (crucial when you’re dealing with those long New Zealand summer days), decent wifi that actually works, and – thank god – effective heating for those crisp alpine nights.

Here’s the thing about the location that took me a day or two to fully appreciate: yes, you’re about a 10-minute drive from central Wanaka, but you’re also perfectly positioned for everything that makes this area special. The Cardrona ski field is practically on your doorstep during winter, and in summer, you’ve got hiking trails leading right into the mountains without fighting the crowds at Roy’s Peak. The drive into town becomes part of the experience – especially that stretch where Lake Wanaka suddenly opens up in front of you. Plus, there’s something to be said for coming back to this quiet valley after a day of tourist chaos in town. The staff seemed to genuinely know the area too, which made a difference when I was trying to figure out the best time to hit Puzzling World or whether the weather would hold for a lake cruise. The only minor downside? You’ll definitely want a car – walking to town isn’t really an option, and while there are shuttles during peak season, having your own wheels gives you the freedom to explore the back roads and hidden spots that make Wanaka special. Overall, it’s the kind of place that grows on you, especially if you’re looking for a proper base to explore the region rather than just a bed for the night.
