Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga Overview
You know what hits you first at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga? The smell of sulfur from the hot springs mixed with that crisp Hokkaido air – it’s actually kind of wonderful once you get used to it. This place sits right on Lake Akan’s shoreline, and I mean literally right there where you can hear the water lapping against the rocks from your room. The hotel’s got that classic Japanese ryokan feel but with enough modern touches that you won’t be fumbling around trying to figure out how everything works.
The onsen here is honestly the main event, and they’ve got both indoor and outdoor baths with views straight across the lake. In winter – which, let’s be real, lasts about six months up here – soaking in those hot springs while snow is falling around you feels pretty magical. The water’s got that mineral-rich quality that leaves your skin feeling softer, though fair warning, it’s hot enough to turn you into a lobster if you’re not careful. What I really appreciated was how they handle the timing; there are women-only hours that rotate, so everyone gets a chance at the prime outdoor spots without the awkward mixed-bathing situation that some foreign visitors worry about.
The rooms are that perfect blend of traditional tatami and Western comfort – you’ll sleep on a proper futon that the staff sets up while you’re at dinner, but there’s also Western-style seating if sitting on the floor isn’t your thing. Speaking of dinner, the kaiseki meals here actually live up to the hype. They source a lot locally (the seafood comes from just down the road, basically), and in autumn you’ll get these incredible wild mushrooms that only grow in Hokkaido’s forests. The presentation is Instagram-worthy, sure, but more importantly, it tastes amazing.
Here’s something most people don’t realize – Akan-Kohan gets absolutely packed during cherry blossom season and the autumn colors, but it’s surprisingly quiet in late spring and early winter. That’s actually when I’d recommend going if you want the full experience without fighting crowds for photos. The Ainu village is just a five-minute walk away, which gives you something cultural to do between onsen sessions, and the staff can arrange ice fishing in winter or hiking excursions when the weather’s decent. Check-in was smooth (they have English-speaking staff, which isn’t always a given in smaller Hokkaido towns), and parking is included – important since you’ll probably be driving unless you’re committed to the bus connections from Kushiro Airport. At this level of service and that location right on the lake, honestly, it’s worth the splurge.
Experience exceptional luxury healing hotels that provide world-class accommodations alongside cutting-edge wellness facilities, creating sanctuaries where guests can focus on their health and well-being.
