ALA HOTEL KYOTO Overview
Honestly, when I first walked into ALA Hotel Kyoto, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, there are so many hotels in that Shiokoji area near the station that they sort of blur together. But this place actually surprised me. The lobby has this clean, minimalist thing going on that feels distinctly Japanese without being over-the-top about it, you know? And the staff at check-in were genuinely helpful, not just going through the motions like at some of the bigger chains.
What really won me over was the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone says. Look, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Kyoto Station, which sounds touristy but is actually brilliant. You can grab the first train to Fushimi Inari before the crowds hit, or catch the last one back from Gion without worrying about expensive taxis. Plus, there’s this whole underground shopping area at the station that locals use – great for grabbing breakfast or picking up those weird Kit Kat flavors everyone talks about. The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet at night, which I appreciated after spending days in the chaos of Nishiki Market and the bamboo groves.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, but with thoughtful touches that show someone actually thinks about how people travel. The bathroom has one of those deep Japanese soaking tubs (not huge, but deeper than Western hotels), and the bed was firm in that way that somehow makes you sleep better than you do at home. I stayed during cherry blossom season – probably the worst time for crowds and prices – but even then, the hotel felt calm and well-managed. The only minor thing was that the walls aren’t super thick, so if you get stuck next to a group of excited tourists, you’ll hear them. But honestly, that 9.1 rating makes sense when you add everything up. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Kyoto, it’s just doing everything right without any fuss. If you want to actually explore the city instead of spending half your time figuring out transit from some remote “luxury” spot, this is the kind of place that just works.

The room was comfortable, staff friendly, nice amenities to take from bottom floor. Water bottles provided in the room.
What could be improved: It was a bit cumbersome to have to take my towels to the spa area.
