HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Amahara – it’s tucked away in this quiet valley called Oroshidani, about ten minutes from central Sumoto, and the approach is through these winding residential streets that make you wonder if your GPS is having a moment. But then you see it, and you sort of understand why this place has that 9.2 rating.

The thing about Amahara is that it gets the balance right between traditional ryokan vibes and modern comfort without feeling like it’s trying too hard. You know what I mean? The lobby has this understated elegance – lots of natural wood and subtle lighting that actually makes you want to linger rather than rush to your room. The staff here genuinely seem to care, which is refreshing. Check-in was smooth, and they remembered my dietary restrictions from the booking without me having to remind them three times like at some places.

What really sold me was the onsen situation. The outdoor bath overlooks this forested hillside, and in the early morning – I’m talking around 6 AM when most guests are still sleeping – it’s incredibly peaceful. You can hear birds and the occasional rustle of leaves, but none of the traffic noise from Route 28 that you get at hotels closer to the main drag. The indoor facilities are spotless too, though they can get a bit crowded during the evening rush around 7-8 PM. My room was on the third floor facing the valley, and while it wasn’t huge, everything felt thoughtfully designed. The futon was actually comfortable (not always a given), and the little sitting area by the window became my favorite spot for morning coffee.

I’ll be honest – the location means you’ll want a car if you’re planning to explore Awaji Island properly. There’s decent parking at the hotel, but getting to places like Naruto Whirlpools or the Awaji Hanasajiki flower park takes about 20-30 minutes of driving. That said, being slightly removed from the touristy areas has its perks. The neighborhood feels authentic, and there’s this family-run soba shop about a five-minute walk down the hill that serves some of the best tempura I had on the island. The hotel’s kaiseki dinner was excellent too – seasonal, beautifully presented, and they were flexible about accommodating my shellfish allergy.

What really impressed me was the attention to small details. Fresh towels appeared in the onsen area throughout the day, the communal spaces were always immaculate, and someone had left a handwritten note in my room with recommendations for local hiking trails. It’s those little touches that make a four-star place feel special rather than just adequate. The Wi-Fi was solid throughout the building, which matters when you’re trying to navigate mountain roads or translate restaurant menus. If you’re looking for a place that captures that serene, authentic Japan experience without the stuffiness of some high-end ryokans, Amahara delivers. Just remember to book dinner in advance – they sometimes fill up, especially during cherry blossom season.

The staff were super friendly and kind enough to give us great tips for sightseeing in Awaji. The room was exceptional with our own open-air Onsen and ocean view. The meals were exceptional and the restaurant had a great ambience. All the staff were very courteous and kind.

What could be improved: At the public bath I noticed that a foreign guest didn't shower before dipping herself in the Onsen. She went straight to the bath from the entrance door. Please provide a clear instruction at their check-in on how to use the onsen bath properly.
