HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what hits you first at AMANE resort GAHAMA? The smell of salt air mixed with something floral – turns out they’ve got these incredible gardens tucked between the main building and the beach. I mean, when you’re pulling up to this place on Shoningahamacho (honestly, just tell your taxi driver “the fancy resort near Beppu Beach” and they’ll know), you’re not expecting to find what feels like a secret botanical garden right there.

The thing about this resort is that it actually gets the balance right between luxury and not making you feel like you’re in some sterile museum. The rooms – and I’m talking about the ocean-facing ones here, which you absolutely should splurge for – have these floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto private terraces. At around sunrise, maybe 6 AM, you can hear the waves but also these birds that nest in the pine trees along the shoreline. The onsen situation is pretty incredible too, especially the outdoor baths where you’re literally soaking in natural hot spring water while staring out at Beppu Bay. Fair warning though – the main outdoor bath gets crowded around sunset (everyone wants those golden hour photos), so I’d recommend going either early morning or later in the evening when it’s just you and maybe a few other guests.

What really sets this place apart from other resorts in the area is how they handle the food situation. The kaiseki dinners aren’t just beautiful – they’re using actual local ingredients, like fish caught that morning from boats you can see from your window, and these tiny vegetables grown on farms maybe twenty minutes inland. The breakfast spread is honestly ridiculous in the best way – fresh sashimi, locally made tofu that’s still warm, and this miso soup that tastes nothing like what you get anywhere else. Parking is straightforward (they have valet service that actually works efficiently), and check-in was smooth even though we arrived during what seemed like a busy weekend. The staff speaks enough English to handle most requests, but having Google Translate ready doesn’t hurt. If you’re visiting during summer, book way ahead – this place fills up with both international travelers and Japanese families from Tokyo looking for that perfect hot spring getaway. The 9.2 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s one of those places where even the small details – like how they time the evening turndown service so you never run into housekeeping – just work.

We had an exceptional experience at AMANE resort GAHAMA , and I can’t praise this hotel enough. From the moment we drove in, we were welcomed with warm smiles from the staff, making us feel right at home. The hotel’s design feels like stepping into a historical museum, with beautiful, sophisticated interiors that create a unique atmosphere. We stayed in one of the Gaham Tower rooms, featuring a stunning view of the sea, an onsen, a jacuzzi, and even a traditional tea room. Although we missed the sunrise view due to cloudy weather, I can only imagine how spectacular it must be.

The hotel is well-suited for international guests, with many staff members speaking multiple languages. The location offers convenient parking and superb dining options, which made our stay even more enjoyable. Truly, everything was fabulous.

One of the most memorable moments was the surprise the staff prepared for our anniversary. I had briefly mentioned our celebration when requesting a specific table for dinner, and they went above and beyond to make it special. We received a beautifully crafted artwork by a local Kitsuki artist as an anniversary gift. This thoughtful gesture made us feel incredibly appreciated, and it added a personal touch to our stay.

We’ll definitely be returning in a heartbeat. AMANE resort GAHAMA exceeded every expectation, and we cannot recommend it highly enough!

The room along with the Onsen bath was absolutely amazing! And on top, it is very cheap when compared to similar resorts in the maldives or dubai. It absolutely shocked us.

There is a JR station right next to it, which made our trip to beppu city centre extremely convenient. There is also a starbucks and Kura Sushi within crawling distance of the resort. Between the two, the starbucks is absurdly important as the average quality of coffee in Japan is below average at best.

What could be improved: We spent along time at 7am to find any staff to help us to store our luggage, and when we did, I tried to see if there is any way to check-in earlier than 3pm, which was a very long time away from our arrival time. When I asked the staff about it, they said no which was expected, but when they asked what was my plan for the day, I told them and they said thats probably not going to last us until 3pm since beppu tourist attraction doesn't take a long time(in their opinion). I know right? Can you please say that anytime other than the time you are not going to be able to give me a room any earlier?

Which wasn't a bad experience, it was just funny and bizzare.

Oh, probably more importantly as a note, we didn't find anything good to take for breakfast, and the coffee was particularly average. So I'd reccomend purchasing your own. However, it was complimentary with the room so once again I wouldn't say there are anydown sides.

The villa and maisonette experience was extraordinary, as both properties have unique views. The maisonette has lovely sea view and the villa has a beautiful small Japanese garden. Both properties are very private and the amenities are excellent. Although our stay was expensive in our view, it is worth the experience and we would love to return to this property again. We also love the private onsen which we used day and night and also we enjoyed wearing the traditional yukata and the thick overcoat which kept us warm during the buggy ride to the gahama seikai tower for breakfast. The breakfast spread was also very good. The housekeeper managed to retrieve my ear stud back button when i told them i lost it. Thank you for the wonderful service!
