ANA InterContinental Tokyo by IHG Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Tokyo hotels, and the ANA InterContinental in Akasaka honestly surprised me – in a really good way. You know how some five-star places feel stuffy or try too hard? This one doesn’t. Walking into the lobby, there’s this understated elegance that feels distinctly Japanese, not like they’re copying some European grand hotel playbook. The staff actually remembers your name after day one (I mean, they probably have notes, but still), and the check-in was refreshingly quick even during that crazy cherry blossom season rush.

What really sold me on this place is the location – and I don’t just mean it’s “convenient.” You’re right in Akasaka, which honestly feels like the best-kept secret for visitors who want to be central but not in the tourist chaos of Shibuya or Shinjuku. Step outside and you’ve got the Hie Shrine literally around the corner, perfect for early morning walks before the city wakes up. The subway connections are fantastic – Tameike-Sanno station gets you anywhere fast – but here’s what the guidebooks won’t tell you: there’s this little stretch of restaurants and izakayas just two blocks over that locals actually frequent. No English menus, but the hotel concierge (ask for Tanaka-san if he’s still there) will write down recommendations in Japanese for you.

The rooms themselves feel spacious by Tokyo standards, which is saying something. Floor-to-ceiling windows give you these sweeping city views, and I actually slept well despite being on a relatively busy street – good soundproofing, I guess. The bathrooms are properly luxurious without being wasteful, and honestly, after walking 20,000 steps around the city, that deep soaking tub becomes your best friend. One small thing that impressed me: the breakfast buffet strikes this perfect balance between international options and proper Japanese choices. None of that sad hotel sushi you sometimes see – they do it right or not at all. The coffee’s excellent too, which… well, you know how hit-or-miss hotel coffee can be. Parking’s available if you’re crazy enough to drive in Tokyo (I wouldn’t), and the fitness center’s decent enough if you need to work off all that incredible food you’ll be eating. At 8.7 rating, it feels about right – not perfect, but the kind of place where everything just works smoothly and you can focus on exploring this incredible city instead of worrying about your hotel.

What could be improved: the fact I cant live here!

the location was great as we were attending a conference at the hotel.

What could be improved: Breakfast was a little bit lacking, there was plenty on offer, but it wasn't remarkable in any way.

The hotel was extremely nice, the staff went out of their way to be helpful, and the location is great if you need to visit the US Embassy or surrounding area.

The conference that I need to attend was at this hotel, so it made sense to stay here, as it only takes a couple of minutes to go to my room during breaks. It is next to Tameike Sanno station, and it's a few stops to Tokyo Station, Ginza, Fish market. And there are always a few taxis downstairs waiting.
You can book the airport bus to pick you up from the hotel to go to the airport, as long as your travel times are within the hotel bus operating hours. Staff extremely helpful. This is one of the more expensive hotels, but for work related travels (tax deductible), not a issue. For privately self funded trips, I probably will choose a cheaper hotel though.

What could be improved: I wish this hotel was closer to Tokyo station because we had to get a Taxi to meet up with Klook Tour groups very early in the mornings. To get to Tokyo station, it's a bit of a walk through all the platforms in Tameike Sanno station, and the signs were a bit confusing, so I go lost the first day.

Stayed for 4 nights in early Jan 2025. We had one of the new suites so all four of us (4yo and 2yo children) could stay in the same room and still have space to walk around, the room was really comfortable and in a quiet corner of the floor. The breakfast served in the club lounge was excellent, we ordered room service on the night we arrived and we also dined in the lobby lounge on the day we checked out and the food options from the restaurants that were served there ala carte were also great! I think the restaurants and food in general at this hotel are all amazing.

What could be improved: As our suite was not on the club floors, husband wished we didn't have to change lifts to get up to the lounge but that's just cause one of our child has mild ASD and it irritated him a little in the beginning that we were heading up instead of down. He got used to the routine though so its alright in the end.
