You know what caught me off guard about Anahata Retreat? It’s tucked right next to this little Ajoba Temple in Ashwem, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up – the entrance is pretty understated for a 5-star place. But then you walk through and suddenly you’re hit with this incredible sea breeze and the sound of waves that’s actually close enough to matter, not that distant ocean noise you get at most “beachfront” hotels.

The location is sort of perfect if you know Goa at all. Ashwem is way more chill than the crazy scenes down in Baga or Calangute, but you’re still close enough to hop over to the Saturday Night Market in Arpora if you want some action. I mean, Mandrem village is literally right there, so you’ve got actual local spots for chai and those amazing Goan fish thalis without having to trek through tourist traps. The temple next door might seem random, but it’s actually kind of nice – there’s this gentle bell ringing in the early morning that’s way more pleasant than construction noise or traffic. Plus, locals are constantly walking by with flowers and offerings, which gives you a real sense of being somewhere authentic rather than stuck in a resort bubble.

What really sets this place apart though is how they’ve managed the whole beachfront thing. Most places either put you right on top of the sand where it’s all salt and wind, or they’re set back so far you need binoculars to see water. Anahata found that sweet spot where you get proper ocean views and easy beach access, but you’re not dealing with sand in everything or fishing boats revving up at 5 AM right outside your window. The staff actually knows the tide schedules too – they’ll tell you the best times for swimming versus when to just sit back and watch the waves crash. And parking isn’t a nightmare, which honestly matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to explore the area. I stayed during shoulder season in October, and while it was busy enough to have good energy, it wasn’t that claustrophobic peak-season madness where you can’t move. The 8.0 rating feels about right – it’s genuinely impressive without being flawless, if that makes sense. There were a few small things (the WiFi got spotty during evening hours, probably when everyone’s uploading their sunset photos), but nothing that actually impacted the experience. If you’re looking for that balance between proper comfort and authentic Goan coastal vibes, this place delivers without trying too hard.
