Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa

Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa Overview

First Impressions

You know that feeling when you step off a boat onto a private island and realize you’ve actually escaped civilization? That’s exactly what hits you at Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa. This five-star retreat sits on Sir Bani Yas Island, about 170 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi, and honestly — the journey there is half the magic. The seaplane transfer gives you this incredible bird’s-eye view of the Arabian Gulf, but even the ferry ride lets you watch the mainland fade away until it’s just you, the water, and this pristine island waiting ahead.

The Island Experience

What makes this place special isn’t just the luxury (though there’s plenty of that) — it’s the wildlife reserve that covers most of the island. I mean, where else can you spot Arabian oryx and gazelles from your villa terrace? The resort actually sits within this protected sanctuary, so morning walks often turn into impromptu safari moments. The island’s got this raw, untouched beauty that feels worlds away from Dubai’s glittering skyline, and couples absolutely love it here — they consistently rate the location around 9.0, which honestly doesn’t surprise me at all.

Accommodations & Comfort

The villas here are something else — each one feels like your own private retreat with direct beach access or mangrove views. What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend Arabian architecture with modern comfort without it feeling forced or theme-park-ish. The beds are genuinely exceptional (guests rave about the sleep quality), and each room has this spacious outdoor area where you can actually hear the waves or spot wildlife depending on your villa’s location. The bathrooms are these gorgeous stone affairs with deep soaking tubs that face the water — perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the island.

Dining & Activities

The breakfast spread is impressive — both continental and buffet options with everything from fresh Middle Eastern specialties to international favorites, and they serve it with views that make even simple toast feel special. The main restaurant focuses on fresh seafood and regional cuisine, which makes sense given the location. Activity-wise, there’s a tennis court, fitness center, and game room, but honestly, the real draw is the island itself — guided nature walks, kayaking through the mangroves, mountain biking trails, and even archaeological site visits. The spa treatments using traditional Arabian techniques are worth booking ahead, especially the outdoor massage pavilions.

Why Guests Love It

This isn’t your typical beach resort where you’re fighting for lounge chairs or dealing with crowds. The island setting naturally limits guest numbers, so everything feels intimate and unhurried. There’s complimentary parking for the ferry terminal on the mainland, which removes one travel headache. What really sets it apart is how they’ve preserved the island’s natural character while delivering genuine luxury — you’re not just staying at a beautiful resort, you’re experiencing a unique ecosystem that few people get to see. It’s the kind of place where you actually disconnect (the WiFi works fine, but somehow you won’t want to use it much) and remember what vacation is supposed to feel like.

The hotel and surrounding areas are lovely. The rooms are spacious, clean, and have all the amenities you would expect. We stayed as a family of 5 in one suite + one king room. The buffet was quite decent. It wasn't as big as it is in other Anantara or other 5 star resorts, but being eco-friendly and on an island, I can understand trying to limit waste so this wasn't a problem for us. There was plenty of options to try, though it was the same thing pretty much every day so keep that in mind if you are staying for more than 3 days... it will get repetitive quickly. The excursions were fun. We did the safari, conservation tour, horseback riding, biking, and falcon show. Our guides were helpful and knowledgeable.

Our kids liked the kids club. It is very small though and has only one person on staff. This wasn't an issue for us as most of the time my kids were the only ones there (we went for about an hour in the afternoons). They did crafts with the lady there, but I think it would get crowded and overwhelming for her if more kids showed up. It would've been nice if there was something educational available in the spirit of the island that they could've done there so you could use it for longer than an hour..

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the entire team at Savanh Restaurant for demonstrating the true essence of hospitality during our recent visit. The professionalism exhibited by Chef Francis and his culinary team in creating remarkable dishes was complemented by their warm welcoming atmosphere. From our arrival at the Desert Island Resort to our check-out, the team handled our experience with exceptional care and attention, earning a well-deserved 10/10 rating.

Moreover, I commend the restaurant supervisor Olio and the check-in team for their exemplary service, equally deserving of high praise. However, as i have a large experience in Owning boutique hotels and Mega yachts charter company in middle east and Europe and Hospitality group of restaurants in UAE and Europe I would like to address a concern regarding the exclusivity of Olio Restaurant, primarily catering to Al Yam guests. During our visit, the restaurant felt underutilized, as we encountered only a handful of occupied tables on a weekend. While the staff's demeanor was commendable, it seemed they lacked hands-on experience, highlighting the need for more regular practice.

I suggest allowing more resort guests or Anantara loyalty members as dimond members and platinum members access to Olio to enhance overall dining occupancy and provide varied experiences, ensuring an engaging atmosphere. Additionally, while the facilities at Al Yam promise exclusivity, we observed that certain aspects, such as gym equipment, remain outdated. And Al yam Guest pool is outdated as well al yam will need few more touches to make the place a great experience for guests i encourage thoughtful consideration of these matters to enhance overall guest experience, as our visits to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island have always been delightful.
