You know what really got me about Anantra Resort Jaisalmer? It’s this perfect blend of desert adventure and actual comfort that’s surprisingly hard to find out there. I mean, when you’re driving down Sam Road toward the sand dunes, you pass a bunch of places that look like they’re trying way too hard to be “authentic” – but Anantra just sits there naturally, like it belongs in the landscape.

The location is honestly brilliant if you’re doing the whole Thar Desert experience. You’re literally minutes from the Sam Sand Dunes, which means you can actually time your camel safari perfectly without that rushed feeling you get when you’re staying back in Jaisalmer city and fighting traffic. I loved being able to walk back after sunset (well, mostly walk – there’s still some soft sand to navigate) and not worry about finding transportation. The staff here really knows the dune schedule too, which sounds silly but matters when you’re trying to catch that golden hour light everyone talks about. They’ll actually tell you when the crowds thin out, usually around 4 PM before the evening rush.

What surprised me was how they’ve managed to keep things relatively upscale without losing that desert camp feeling. The tents – and they are proper tents, not those concrete things shaped like tents – have real beds and decent bathrooms, plus they’re spaced out enough that you’re not hearing your neighbors’ entire conversation. The traditional Rajasthani architecture feels genuine rather than theme-park-ish, probably because they’ve used local craftspeople who actually know what they’re doing. Honestly, the evening cultural programs are pretty solid too, though they can get a bit loud if you’re trying to sleep early (bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper). The folk music performances happen right in the main courtyard, and while they’re definitely tourist-oriented, the musicians are talented and seem to genuinely enjoy what they’re doing.

Here’s the thing about desert properties – they either nail the whole experience or they feel like you’re roughing it for no good reason. Anantra definitely nails it. The food is way better than you’d expect this far from the city center, with a nice mix of Rajasthani specialties and familiar options. Their dal baati churma is legitimately good, not just “good for a hotel.” Service moves at desert pace, which means slower than city hotels but with more genuine warmth. The check-in process was smooth, and they actually helped coordinate our camel safari timing with the sunset, which saved us from that awkward waiting-around period.

If you’re coming during peak season (October through March), book way ahead because this place fills up with people who’ve figured out it’s one of the better options near the dunes. Summer is obviously brutal here, but if you can handle the heat, you’ll practically have the place to yourself. Just remember that desert nights get surprisingly cold, even when the days are scorching – the staff will bring extra blankets, but pack a light jacket anyway.
