Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of lake resorts, but Anantya By The Lake actually gets it right – and honestly, that’s rare in this part of Tamil Nadu. The place sits right on Chittar Lake in this tiny village called Kaliel, about 45 minutes from Kanyakumari proper, and you know what? That distance is exactly what makes it special. You’re far enough from the tourist chaos but close enough that you’re not stuck in the middle of nowhere.

The drive there is half the experience – you’re winding along State Highway 45 through these rolling hills, and suddenly you see this pristine lake spread out below you. I mean, Chittar Lake isn’t huge, but it’s got this mirror-like quality that changes completely depending on the time of day. Early morning, it’s all misty and mysterious, then by afternoon it’s this brilliant blue-green that honestly looks almost fake in photos. The hotel itself is built right into the landscape – they didn’t just plop a concrete box down and call it luxury. The architecture actually works with the natural slope, so most rooms have unobstructed water views without feeling like you’re in a high-rise.

What really sold me was the attention to local details. The staff – and I’m talking about everyone from housekeeping to the restaurant team – they’re mostly from surrounding villages and actually know the area. Ask them about the best time to spot kingfishers (early evening, by the way), or where to find the ancient temple ruins nearby, and you’ll get real answers, not rehearsed tourism board nonsense. The food situation is solid too – they do this fusion thing with Kerala and Tamil cuisines that could easily go wrong, but their chef clearly knows what they’re doing. Try the karimeen if it’s available; they source it locally and it’s perfectly spiced without being overwhelming. The only minor gripe I have is that the WiFi gets spotty during monsoon season, but honestly, if you’re checking emails while staring at that view, you’re doing it wrong. Parking is never an issue – they’ve got this covered area that’s actually thoughtfully designed, unlike most places that just pave over whatever’s convenient. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving before sunset if it’s your first time – the narrow village roads can be tricky to navigate in the dark, and you’ll want to see the lake properly lit up anyway.
