You know what really struck me about Apartamento Puerto Velero Tongoy? It’s one of those places where the photos actually undersell the experience – and honestly, that almost never happens anymore. I mean, a 9.8 rating sounds almost too good to be true, but after spending time here, I get it.

The location is pretty much perfect if you’re looking to experience the real Tongoy without being stuck in some generic resort bubble. Puerto Velero has this laid-back fishing village vibe that most of the Coquimbo region has lost to development, but here it still feels authentic. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the beach, and I’m talking about the kind of beach where locals actually hang out – not just tourists taking selfies. The mornings are incredible; you’ll hear the fishing boats heading out around dawn, and there’s something really peaceful about starting your day with that sound instead of traffic. The apartment itself feels more like staying at a friend’s place than a rental. The kitchen is actually functional (you can cook real meals, not just heat up instant noodles), and the living space has those little touches that show someone cares about the details. Good water pressure in the shower too, which – let’s be honest – can be hit or miss in smaller Chilean coastal towns.

What I really appreciate is how quiet it gets at night. Tongoy isn’t exactly a party destination, which works perfectly if you’re trying to decompress. You’re close enough to Coquimbo and La Serena if you want city amenities or nightlife, but Puerto Velero gives you that slower pace where you can actually hear yourself think. The parking situation is straightforward too – no circling the block for twenty minutes like you’d deal with in the bigger towns. The hosts clearly know what they’re doing; check-in was smooth, and they had solid recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. Actually, they pointed me toward this little seafood place that doesn’t even have a proper sign, but serves the best empanadas de mariscos I’ve had outside of Valparaíso. During my stay, I noticed a lot of Chilean families choosing this area for their vacations, which is always a good sign – locals know where the value is. The building feels well-maintained without being overly fancy, and you get the sense that this is a place people return to year after year. It’s got that comfortable, lived-in quality that makes you want to extend your stay by a few days.
