This place sits in Katsuura, which is actually perfect if you’re planning to hit up Manno Park (the cherry blossoms there in spring are absolutely ridiculous, by the way). The hotel itself has this quiet confidence about it – everything just works without any fuss. Check-in was smooth, parking was easy, and honestly, the staff seemed genuinely happy to see guests rather than just going through the motions. The rooms have that clean, minimalist Japanese aesthetic that actually feels calming instead of sterile, and I mean, when you’re getting a 9.4 rating, they’re clearly doing something right. The tatami areas in some rooms smell like that fresh straw scent that immediately tells you this isn’t some cookie-cutter chain hotel.

What really got me though was how they handle the little things. The onsen – because of course there’s an onsen – isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly maintained and the water temperature is spot-on. I went around 7 PM and had it mostly to myself, which felt like stumbling onto a secret. The breakfast situation is solid too, mixing Japanese staples with enough Western options that you won’t feel lost if you’re not ready for fish and rice first thing in the morning. And here’s something I appreciated: they actually understand that foreign guests might need different pillow firmness or extra blankets without making you feel like you’re being difficult for asking. The location works really well if you’re exploring this part of Kagawa – you’re close enough to Kotohira and its famous shrine for a day trip, but far enough from the tourist crowds that evenings feel peaceful. I could hear some traffic from the main road, but it’s more of a gentle hum than anything disruptive. Honestly, for a 4-star place in this area, Asan Kotonami delivers exactly what you want: comfort without pretension, service that feels personal, and that sense that you’ve found somewhere the locals would actually recommend to their friends.
