Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Cabañas 4 Volcanes Frutillar on Los Manzanos street – I mean, the name pretty much tells you everything, right? Four volcanoes, and you’re staying in cabins. But walking into this place, you immediately get why it has that crazy 9.8 rating. The cabins are scattered across this hillside property that gives you these ridiculous views of Llanquihue Lake, and on clear days (which, let’s be real, isn’t every day in this part of Chile) you can actually see all four volcanoes the place is named after.

What I love about staying here is how it feels authentically Chilean without trying too hard. The cabins themselves are well… they’re proper cabins, not those weird hybrid hotel-room things some places try to pass off. Thick wooden walls that actually keep the sound out – important when you’ve got families with kids in neighboring units. Each one has a little kitchenette that’s actually functional, not just decorative, which is clutch if you want to grab groceries from the Unimarc down in town and cook breakfast while watching the lake. The Wi-Fi works fine, though it can get a bit sketchy during heavy rain (which happens). Parking’s easy and free, something you don’t always get in Frutillar, especially during the summer festival season when the whole town goes nuts.

You know what really sets this place apart though? The location on Los Manzanos puts you about a 10-minute walk from the lake shore, but you’re far enough up the hill that you avoid the tourist crowds that swarm the German colonial area. Don’t get me wrong – you’ll want to check out those fancy European-style buildings and maybe grab kuchen at one of the cafés, but it’s nice to retreat somewhere quieter. The staff here actually seems to care about what they’re doing, not just going through the motions. They’ll tell you which trails around the lake are worth walking and which restaurants in town are tourist traps (hint: avoid the ones right on the main plaza). The only thing that might bug some people is that it can get pretty quiet here at night – like, really quiet if you’re used to city noise. But honestly, after a day of driving around the lake region or hiking, that silence hits different. Just pack some warm clothes because even in summer, the evenings get chilly with that lake breeze coming off the water.
