You know what struck me first about Calamigos? It’s this weird wonderful contradiction – you’re technically in Malibu, but driving up Latigo Canyon Road feels like you’re heading into proper ranch country, all rolling hills and that dusty California smell that city folks forget exists. I mean, one minute you’re dealing with PCH traffic, and twenty minutes later you’re hearing actual roosters. The whole place sits on this sprawling property that honestly feels more like visiting someone’s very well-appointed family compound than staying at a traditional hotel.

The accommodations are scattered around the property in a way that actually works – some are these rustic-chic cabins (think exposed beams but with heated bathroom floors), others are more like safari-style tents that somehow manage to feel luxurious instead of like you’re roughing it. What I loved is how quiet it gets at night, especially if you snag one of the spots further from the main lodge. During the day there’s this constant gentle activity – horses being led around, kids shrieking happily at the pool, staff cruising by in golf carts – but come evening, it’s just crickets and maybe some distant laughter from the fire pit area. The whole ranch-meets-resort thing could’ve felt gimmicky, but they’ve been doing this since the 1940s, so there’s this lived-in authenticity that’s hard to fake.

Here’s the thing though – and this is where Calamigos really gets interesting – they’ve got this beach club component down in Malibu proper that most people don’t realize comes with your stay. It’s not like you’re trapped up in the canyon if you want that classic Malibu beach experience. The shuttle situation works better than you’d expect, and honestly, having both options means you can do the whole horseback riding, s’mores around the campfire thing one day, then wake up and decide you want to spend the afternoon lounging by the ocean instead. I’ve stayed at plenty of places that promise “the best of both worlds” but this is one of the few that actually delivers. Just heads up – if you’re coming during wedding season (which seems to be basically April through October), there might be some ceremony happening somewhere on the property, but the grounds are big enough that it rarely feels intrusive. Actually adds to the whole festive vibe if anything.
