You know what struck me first about Camden on the Lake? It’s actually right on the water – and I mean right on it, not like those places that claim lakefront views but you need binoculars to see anything. Pull up to 2359 Bittersweet Road and you’re basically at the shoreline of Lake of the Ozarks, which honestly makes all the difference when you’re trying to unwind.

The resort has this whole sprawling feel to it – not cramped like some lake properties that try to squeeze every square foot out of their lot. I stayed here during peak summer season (probably not the smartest move if you’re looking for deals, but the kids were out of school), and even with families everywhere, it never felt overwhelming. The staff actually knows what they’re doing too, which you can’t always count on at vacation spots. Check-in was smooth, parking’s easy enough – they’ve got plenty of spaces, though you might walk a bit during busy weekends. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, nothing fancy but everything works and the beds are actually comfortable. Some of the units have these great decks where you can sit with your morning coffee and watch the lake wake up, which is honestly worth the price difference if you can swing it.

What really sets Camden apart though is how they’ve figured out the whole lake experience without making it feel like a tourist trap. The marina’s right there, so if you’re into boating or want to rent something for the day, you don’t have to drive around looking for a decent place – I’ve seen some sketchy boat rental operations around the Ozarks, trust me. The pools are actually clean (again, not always a given), and there’s this lazy river thing that the kids went crazy for. But here’s the thing – they’ve also got quieter spots where adults can hang out without constant cannon balls and Marco Polo games. The restaurant on-site is better than it needs to be, honestly. I mean, you’re not going to confuse it with fine dining, but after a day on the water, their burgers and fish actually hit the spot, and the portions are generous.

If you’re coming during summer, just know it gets busy – like, really busy on holiday weekends. But shoulder seasons here are fantastic. Late spring and early fall, you get the beautiful weather without the crowds, plus the lake’s still warm enough for swimming well into September. The area around Bittersweet Road is pretty developed, so you’re not isolated if you need to run out for supplies or want to check out some of the local spots – there’s decent shopping and restaurants within a few minutes’ drive. Honestly, for a Lake of the Ozarks resort, Camden strikes that sweet spot between having everything you need on property while still feeling like you’re actually at the lake, not just some generic resort that happens to be near water. The 8.9 rating makes sense when you’re there – it’s not perfect, but it gets the important stuff right.
