Camelot Island Retreat Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Camelot Island Retreat on Barnett Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s tucked away in this quiet residential stretch of Appleby, and you might actually drive past it if you’re not paying attention. But man, was I wrong about first impressions.
The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone really thought about what travelers actually want. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling – not like those sterile chain hotels where everything’s beige and forgettable. What really got me was how the staff knew I was coming before I even reached the desk (small place advantages, I guess), and check-in took maybe three minutes. No lengthy spiel about amenities I’ll never use, just genuine helpfulness. The woman at reception – I think her name was Sarah – actually drew me a little map showing the best walking route to the waterfront, which honestly saved me from getting lost like I usually do in new places.
Here’s what you need to know about staying here: the rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully sized” rather than huge, but everything works exactly as it should. The bed was one of those where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed, and – this matters more than people realize – the pillows were actually decent. Not too flat, not like sleeping on a cloud that gives you neck problems. The bathroom had proper water pressure (thank god), and there’s this little coffee setup that uses real beans, not those terrible pods. Small touches, but they add up. I mean, how many places have you stayed where the WiFi actually works in every corner of the room?
What really sets this place apart though is its location in Appleby itself. You’re maybe a fifteen-minute walk from the main waterfront area, but far enough away that you don’t get the noise from late-night revelers or early morning delivery trucks. The neighborhood feels properly residential – I saw people walking their dogs, kids heading to school, that sort of authentic local life you don’t always get to witness as a tourist. There’s this great little café about two blocks down (turn left when you leave the hotel, can’t miss it) where locals actually go for breakfast, not just other travelers.
The 9.8 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there. It’s not trying to be fancy for fancy’s sake – it’s just really, really good at being a hotel. Staff remembers your name, rooms are spotless without that overwhelming chemical smell some places have, and everything from the elevator to the door locks works smoothly. You know what I appreciated most? They have proper blackout curtains, so you can actually sleep in if you want to, and the walls are thick enough that you won’t hear your neighbors’ conversations or TV shows.
Look, if you’re expecting a resort with multiple pools and a spa, this isn’t that. But if you want a place that feels like someone’s paying attention to the details that actually matter – where you can get a solid night’s sleep, great coffee in the morning, and friendly advice about where to go – then honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to find better in this part of New Zealand.
The finest healing hotels of the world feature renowned spa treatments, nutritional programs, and mindfulness practices that have attracted wellness seekers for generations.

Amazing place so much provided!
What could be improved: That I didn’t get to stay longer
Very comfortable and quiet. Good base from which to explore north west cost of South Island and nearby wineries. Good fresh produce, meat and wine an easy 5km drive away.
What could be improved: Nothing to dislike.

Wonderful property with amazing garden and super friendly hosts. Location is a little remote (which is great), right at the water. Wish we could have stayed longer! Thanks!
