Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Benbrae Resort on Cardrona Valley Road – I mean, ski accommodation can be pretty hit-or-miss, right? But this place actually surprised me. The Cardrona Ski Apartment sits in this perfect spot where you’re close enough to hear the early morning groomers heading up the mountain (which is weirdly comforting if you’re a ski nerd like me), but far enough from the main Cardrona access road that you’re not dealing with the 7 AM convoy of rental cars and ski buses.

What really got me was how thoughtfully everything’s set up inside. You know how most ski places just throw together random furniture and call it done? Not here. The apartment actually feels like someone lives there – proper kitchen with decent knives (thank god, because have you tried cutting anything with those awful rental place knives?), a living area where you can actually spread out your gear without tripping over everything, and windows that frame the valley in a way that makes you want to just sit there with your morning coffee. The heating works properly too, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places get this wrong. I stayed there during a particularly brutal cold snap in July and never once woke up shivering.

The location thing is huge though – and I don’t just mean it’s “conveniently located” or whatever. You’re literally 10 minutes from Cardrona’s base lodge, but here’s what the booking sites don’t tell you: you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to Treble Cone (about 20 minutes if you take the Crown Range Road, which is stunning on a clear day), and Wanaka town is close enough that you can actually have a proper dinner somewhere decent instead of resort food every night. Plus – and this is key if you’re traveling with kids or non-skiers – there’s enough space that people aren’t climbing over each other after a long day on the mountain. The whole Benbrae complex is pretty quiet too; I think because it’s mostly longer-term stays rather than party crowds, so you can actually sleep without earplugs.

I’ll be honest, the 9.7 rating seemed a bit generous when I booked, but after staying there? It makes sense. It’s one of those places where all the little details just work – decent water pressure, reliable wifi (crucial for uploading those powder selfies), and enough storage that you’re not living out of suitcases for a week. The only minor thing I’d mention is that grocery runs require a bit of planning since you’re not exactly next door to a supermarket, but that’s pretty standard for anywhere decent in the Cardrona Valley. If you’re serious about skiing and want a base that feels more like a home than a hotel room, this place delivers.
