Cascades Lakefront Motel

You know what struck me first about Cascades Lakefront Motel? It’s actually right on the water – and I mean properly on it, not like those places that claim “lakefront” when you need binoculars to see Lake Taupo. Walking up to 303 Lake Terrace, you’re literally steps from the shore, which honestly feels a bit surreal for what they’re calling a motel. The whole setup is way more upscale than that name suggests – I mean, we’re talking 5-star territory here, though it keeps this relaxed, unpretentious vibe that works perfectly for Taupo.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know the area. Lake Terrace runs right along the waterfront (obviously), and you’re close enough to walk into town for dinner but far enough out that you don’t get the weekend party noise from the main strip. I stayed in autumn when the mornings were crisp, and there’s something magical about having your coffee while watching the mist lift off the lake – you can actually hear the water lapping against the shore from most rooms. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Taupo’s town center during tourist season will appreciate.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to feel both polished and genuine. The rooms have this clean, modern aesthetic but they haven’t gone overboard with the fancy-hotel nonsense – you’ve got everything you actually need without feeling like you’re paying for stuff you’ll never use. The staff seem to genuinely know the area (always a good sign), and check-in was refreshingly human rather than that scripted hotel-speak you get at the big chains. I’d say the 8.5 rating feels about right – it’s excellent without being perfect, which honestly makes it more appealing to me. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re here during peak summer, you’ll want to book dinner reservations early since being this close to the good spots means everyone else figures that out too. But really, if you’re planning to spend time actually enjoying Lake Taupo rather than just driving past it, this is exactly where you want to be staying.
