You know what hits you first when you pull into Cheeca Lodge? It’s not the typical Florida resort vibe you’re expecting – there’s this old-school Keys elegance that actually feels authentic, not like someone’s trying too hard to recreate it. The property sits right at Mile Marker 82 in Islamorada, which honestly is one of the better spots in the middle Keys if you want that balance of having stuff to do without the craziness of Key West.
The lodge itself has this weathered luxury thing going on – I mean that in the best way possible. You can tell this place has been around (since the 1940s, actually), but they’ve kept it updated without losing that laid-back Keys character. The rooms are solid, nothing revolutionary but comfortable with those little touches that remind you you’re paying for a 5-star experience. What really gets me is the lagoon – it’s this calm, shallow area perfect for paddleboarding or just floating around when the ocean gets choppy. The beach isn’t huge, but it’s protected and way less crowded than what you’ll find down in Key Largo. Plus, you’re literally steps from some of the best tarpon fishing in the world if that’s your thing.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me before my first visit: the spa is actually worth the splurge (rare for resort spas, honestly), and if you’re driving down, don’t stress about the parking situation – they’ve got plenty of space, which is not something you can say about most Keys hotels. The restaurants on property are decent but pricey, so consider wandering over to Morada Bay or Pierre’s just down the road for dinner – both are walking distance and give you more of that local flavor. One thing to keep in mind is that this place can get pretty busy during tarpon season (April through July), so if you’re looking for maximum chill factor, maybe aim for fall or early spring. The staff here actually knows the area well too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many resort employees are just working seasonally and can’t tell you where to find the best conch fritters or which dive spots are worth your time.

This is a fabulous resort - we could have stayed for weeks. There are so many activities, multiple pools, and a lovely beach. The staff were incredible - especially Nat for organising everything for us and making sure our stay was special. Also PrayGod who was always there to be helpful. Loved the landscaping, proximity to the beach, staff was excellent, and it wasn’t overcrowded so you could enjoy the beach without having to hunt for a chair like many other beach front properties. We had breakfast at the onsite restaurant every morning and food and service was great!
