Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel Overview
You know, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to the Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel – it’s tucked right there on the shores of Lake Chuzenji, and honestly, the setting alone is worth the trip up those winding mountain roads to get here. This place has been around since 1873, and you can actually feel that history the moment you walk into the lobby with its old-world wooden beams and that slightly musty smell that somehow feels comforting rather than off-putting.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep this authentic ryokan vibe while still feeling like a proper hotel. I mean, you’re not going to find ultra-modern everything here, but that’s sort of the point. The onsen baths overlooking the lake are incredible – especially in the early morning when the mist is still hanging over the water and you’ve got the whole place to yourself. The staff actually knows their stuff too, not just the scripted tourist information. When I asked about hiking trails, the front desk guy drew me a little map showing a lesser-known path that leads to this amazing viewpoint most people miss entirely.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place in Japan – clean, comfortable, with those deep soaking tubs that Americans always get excited about. Mine faced the lake, and I spent way too much time just sitting by the window watching the tour boats come and go. Fair warning though: if you’re here during autumn foliage season (late October), it gets absolutely packed and the rates go through the roof. Spring is honestly better anyway – fewer crowds, and you get those gorgeous azaleas blooming around the lake without fighting for photo spots. The kaiseki dinner they serve is really well done, nothing revolutionary but proper seasonal ingredients prepared the right way. Parking is free, which is nice since you’ll definitely want a car to explore the area properly – the Kegon Falls are just a few minutes away, and there are all these little temples scattered around that you’d never find otherwise. The 8.3 rating feels about right; it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers exactly what it promises in a location that’s pretty hard to beat.
Guest Reviews
Stunning scenery and spacious room.
Wester style onsen hotel near lake Chuzenji, very good service in the restaraunt, food was delicious. Onsen was wonderful, outside bath is also good. Rooms have a thermostat and central air heating, which is unusual in Japan. What could be improved:...
Beautiful and quiet location close to the lake. Calmer than the same Kanaya hotel in Nikko.
What could be improved: No response to the inquiry sent to customer center previously.
Great location, convenient to public buses for travelling around the area. The room with balcony was very comfortable. The front desk staff were most helpful. The onsen! What could be improved: Dinner was disappointing and I would not choose to...
Beautiful place, yesteryear vibe with Japanese hospitality
What could be improved: Bikes for hire poorly maintained so an easy afternoon biking turned into a mission
Location and foods
What could be improved: Security is weak such as no safe box in the room as well as no rocker in the Onsen.
Cozy hotel and very good location. I loved the silence around. What could be improved: We had breakfast and dinner. Was delicious but the portions was like for a child. Not enough. For 70 000 yen 2 nights with breakfast and diner I was expecting...
Very quiet place and beautiful location.
There are many restaurants near the hotel.
outdoor onsen
What could be improved: You have to pay extra for Japanese breakfast and dinner is also not Japanese. But still delicious meals.
