You know what surprised me most about Colonia Santa Maria? It’s tucked away on this quiet street in Baga where you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – but honestly, that’s part of its charm. I mean, you’re still close enough to hear the buzz from the main beach strip, but far enough that you actually get some peace when you want it.

The place has this interesting vibe where it feels properly upscale (it’s definitely earning those five stars) but without that stuffy resort atmosphere that makes you feel like you can’t relax in your flip-flops. The lobby has these gorgeous Portuguese-inspired tiles that immediately remind you you’re in Goa, not just any beach destination. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the area – like, when I asked about good spots for sunset that weren’t completely overrun with tourists, the front desk guy gave me three specific recommendations that were genuinely perfect. You don’t get that kind of local insight at most places.

The rooms are spacious, and I loved that they kept some traditional elements while making everything feel modern and comfortable. The AC is powerful (trust me, you’ll need it during the day), and the beds are actually firm enough that you won’t wake up with a sore back. Small thing, but the shower pressure is excellent – I’ve stayed at supposedly luxury places in Goa where the water barely trickles out. The balcony views vary depending on your room, but even the ones facing the quieter side have nice garden views. Parking is straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Baga during peak season will tell you is no small feat. The pool area gets busy around mid-morning when families arrive, but if you’re an early bird or prefer evening swims, it’s lovely and peaceful. Walking to the main Baga beach takes maybe eight minutes, and you’ll pass some great local spots for chai and snacks along the way. Honestly, the location hits that sweet spot where you’re connected to everything but not drowning in the chaos – which, let’s be real, Baga can definitely get chaotic, especially on weekends.
