You know what’s funny about CordeValle? I’d driven past that exit on 101 probably a hundred times heading to Santa Cruz, never thinking much about what was tucked back there in the San Martin hills. Turns out it’s this absolutely stunning resort that feels like you’ve been transported to some high-end European countryside retreat – complete with rolling fairways and those gorgeous Spanish colonial buildings that actually look authentic, not like some theme park version.

The thing that gets you first is just how quiet it is once you wind up that drive. I mean, you’re still technically in Silicon Valley, but it might as well be Napa for all the tech bros and traffic noise you’ll encounter. The golf course is obviously the main draw – it’s this Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that’s honestly intimidating if you’re not a scratch player, but beautiful enough that even my non-golfing friends were impressed just walking around the grounds. What I really appreciated though was how they’ve managed to make the whole place feel intimate despite being pretty sprawling. The main lodge has this great terrace where you can grab a drink and watch the sun set over the Santa Cruz Mountains, and there’s usually just enough of a breeze to keep things comfortable even on those brutal South Bay summer days.

The rooms are… well, they’re what you’d expect for the price point, which is substantial but honestly worth it for special occasions. Everything’s got that warm, earthy feel with dark wood and rich fabrics, and the bathrooms are legitimately spectacular – those deep soaking tubs overlooking the valley are dangerous if you’re trying to stick to any kind of schedule. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra night because I just couldn’t deal with the thought of heading back to my cramped San Francisco apartment. The spa is tucked away in this quiet corner of the property, and while it’s pricey, the hot stone massage I had there basically ruined me for every other massage I’ve gotten since. One small thing – if you’re driving up from the peninsula, definitely grab dinner reservations ahead of time, especially on weekends. The restaurant gets packed with locals who know it’s one of the better fine dining spots south of San Jose, and there’s not a whole lot else around if you strike out. But honestly, after a day of golf or just lounging by that gorgeous pool area, you’re probably going to want to eat there anyway. It’s the kind of place that makes you remember why you moved to California in the first place.
