HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ll be honest with you – when I first pulled up to the Coronado Marriott, I wasn’t exactly blown away. It’s this big, sprawling resort that feels more business-conference-y than boutique-charming, and the entrance kind of blends into the whole Second Street strip. But here’s the thing about Coronado Island (and yeah, I know it’s technically a peninsula, but whatever) – even the chain hotels have something special going for them because of where they are.
What actually won me over was stepping out onto their back patio area and realizing you’re literally looking at the San Diego Bay. I mean, you can see the downtown skyline across the water, and if you time it right around sunset, it’s honestly pretty spectacular. The rooms themselves are standard Marriott fare – clean, reliable, those crispy white sheets you expect – but the bay-facing ones are worth the upgrade if you can swing it. Pro tip: even if you don’t get a water view, you can still hang out by their pool area, which has this decent vista and is usually way less crowded than Hotel del Coronado’s scene down the beach. Speaking of which, you’re maybe a 10-minute walk from the Del if you want to gawk at the fancy Victorian architecture, but you’ll pay about half the price staying here instead.
The spa is actually where this place surprised me – it’s tucked away and feels way more intimate than you’d expect from a big resort. I got a massage there after spending way too much time walking around Balboa Park (do yourself a favor and take the ferry over to downtown, it’s like a mini-cruise for $5), and honestly, it was exactly what I needed. The restaurant downstairs is fine but nothing spectacular – though their happy hour isn’t bad if you’re just looking to decompress with a drink. Parking is included, which is clutch because finding street parking in Coronado can be a nightmare, especially during summer weekends when the beach crowds descend. The whole island gets pretty sleepy after 9 PM, which some people love and others find boring, but there’s something nice about being able to walk around without fighting tourist hordes. You’re also close enough to bike over to the more local spots – there’s this little stretch near the golf course where you can grab coffee and actually chat with people who live here year-round. It’s not the most luxurious place you’ll ever stay, but for a solid base to explore San Diego without dealing with downtown hotel prices or traffic, it really does the job well.

Beautiful location! It's relatively close to downtown (you have to cross the bridge, but then you're right there), the pool was amazing, the staff was friendly, and all necessary things were well within reach. Just a short walk from an outlet area with stores and restaurants.
