Crieff Hydro Overview
First Impressions
When you first pull up to Crieff Hydro, there’s something wonderfully old-school about the whole experience — and I mean that in the best possible way. This four-star Victorian resort sits on sprawling grounds in the Perthshire hills, and honestly, it feels like stepping into a different era. The building itself is this grand, imposing structure that’s been welcoming guests since 1868, though don’t worry — they’ve updated all the important bits while keeping that authentic Scottish charm intact.
Location & Setting
The location in Crieff is absolutely spot-on, especially if you’re looking to escape the usual tourist crowds. You’re nestled in the Perthshire countryside with proper Highland views, but still close enough to civilization that you won’t feel completely cut off. What I love is how couples seem to really connect with this place — there’s something about those rolling hills and the peaceful atmosphere that just works for romantic getaways. The grounds are massive too, so you can actually find quiet corners to yourself, which is rarer than you’d think at most hotels.
The Room Experience
The rooms here vary quite a bit depending on which part of the building you’re in, but that’s part of the charm. I stayed in one of the newer wings, and while it wasn’t flashy, everything felt solid and comfortable — proper Scottish hospitality without any pretense. The room had those thick walls that actually keep noise out, and the heating worked brilliantly (trust me, you’ll appreciate this in the Scottish hills). Some rooms have lovely views over the grounds, though honestly, even the ones facing inward are perfectly pleasant.
Dining & Amenities
Breakfast here is genuinely impressive — they’ve got everything from a full Scottish spread to continental options, plus they actually do proper vegetarian and vegan choices that don’t feel like an afterthought. The main restaurant serves hearty, no-nonsense food that hits the spot after a day exploring the countryside. What really sets this place apart though is the spa facilities — the hydrotherapy pool is the real star, and after trying it, you’ll understand why they kept “Hydro” in the name all these years. There’s also a proper leisure center with activities that’ll keep you busy if the weather turns.
Why Guests Love It
You know what makes Crieff Hydro work? It’s unpretentious in the best way possible. This isn’t trying to be some ultra-modern boutique experience — it’s a proper Scottish retreat that knows exactly what it is. The staff genuinely seem to care about making sure you’re comfortable, and there’s free parking right on-site, which honestly makes everything so much easier when you’re exploring this part of Scotland. It’s the kind of place where you can actually unwind without feeling like you need to dress up for dinner or worry about whether you’re doing the “right” activities. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Hotel was beautiful and the walks surrounding the hotel were lovely. So much activities! I particularly enjoyed the horse riding hack!
Overall the hotel was really nice and well kept. Room was spacious, ‘cosy’ and well made up. Bathroom a little mouldy but nothing too bad. Panto was brilliant both for both kids and adults. Plenty things to do to keep children occupied, and the...
Great hotel. Been coming here since I was a child. Facilities excellent, great for kids and so much to do.
restaurant was a bit noisy and staff looked tired and a bit robotic.
The Santa experience was so well organised. The restaurant staff in The Terrace and the bar/coffee shop were terrific.
There was loads of entertainment for the children. This was our first trip away as a family of 3 so it was extra special especially with it being Xmas themed.

Room very good. Clean and fresh. Was charged for childcare which I thought was included but seems not when booking through booking.com.
The room was lovely and the facilities were lovely too. The take out rooms were super. I loved the entrance lobby.
Bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The bathroom was clean with lovely fluffy towels. Lots of choice at breakfast and was able to sit near the window. Good choice of drinks in the various bars.
