HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Crieff Hydro on Ferntower Road – I mean, the name sounds like some Victorian medical facility, right? But honestly, this place surprised me in the best way possible. It’s this sprawling 4-star property that sits up on the hill overlooking Crieff, and once you’re there, you realize why families have been coming here for generations. The building itself is proper old-school Scottish hotel grandeur, all turrets and stonework, but inside it’s been updated just enough to feel comfortable without losing that historic charm.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to be everything to everyone without feeling scattered. I watched kids running around the indoor pool area while their parents actually looked relaxed (rare sight, that), and later saw the same spaces filled with couples on romantic getaways. The grounds are massive – I’m talking acres of lawns and gardens where you can actually lose the crowds if you want some peace. They’ve got activities coming out of their ears too, though I’ll be honest, some of the organized entertainment feels a bit summer camp-ish if that’s not your thing. But the spa facilities? Actually really good. And the restaurant does solid Scottish fare – nothing revolutionary, but the kind of hearty food that hits the spot after you’ve been tramping around the Perthshire hills all day.

Here’s the thing though – Crieff itself is worth the trip regardless of where you stay. You’re right in proper Highland territory here, with Loch Earn just a short drive away, and you can walk into town easily enough (though it’s a bit of a trek back up the hill if you’ve had a pint or two at one of the local pubs). The hotel’s parking is straightforward, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with Scottish country roads and rental cars. I’d say the 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what it promises. The staff clearly know their stuff, check-in was smooth, and honestly, there’s something quite satisfying about staying somewhere that’s been doing this hospitality thing since before your great-grandparents were born. Just don’t expect boutique hotel silence – with all those families and activity groups, it can get properly lively, especially around dinner time.

Overall the hotel was really nice and well kept. Room was spacious, ‘cosy’ and well made up. Bathroom a little mouldy but nothing too bad. Panto was brilliant both for both kids and adults. Plenty things to do to keep children occupied, and the animal man on Xmas eve was great. Kids disco at night too. Sadly our schedule didn’t allow us to catch any time in the cinema but there was around 3 movies a day being played! Kids pool is heated which was nice, Lao had an inflatable slide which came out at certain times which the kids loved. Reception and central areas were very festive and had a nice vibe. Saxo player, free mulled wine and mince pies too! Santa also doing the rounds in the reception so nice for the kids that didn’t get an official grotto visit. The two elves at the grotto were really good, extra shoutout to them as they dealt with a couple of kids that had disabilities/learning difficulties in the grotto group particularly well. All the hotel staff were very nice and attentive. Good spread at breakfast, however no pancakes or waffles like advertised on the online menu.

The Santa experience was so well organised. The restaurant staff in The Terrace and the bar/coffee shop were terrific.

There was loads of entertainment for the children. This was our first trip away as a family of 3 so it was extra special especially with it being Xmas themed.
