Deco City Motor Lodge Overview
You know what caught me off guard about the Deco City Motor Lodge? The name actually makes sense once you see it. I mean, Napier’s famous for its Art Deco architecture after the 1931 earthquake basically rebuilt the whole city, and this place on Kennedy Road gets that vibe without trying too hard. It’s not some cheesy themed hotel β more like they just understood what fits in this town.
The location’s honestly pretty smart if you know Napier at all. Kennedy Road puts you close enough to walk into the main Art Deco quarter (maybe 10-15 minutes if you don’t mind a stroll), but you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds or paying those Marine Parade prices. There’s decent parking too, which anyone who’s driven around central Napier during festival season will appreciate. The rooms have this clean, modern feel β nothing fancy, but everything works properly. I actually slept really well there, and the street’s quiet enough that you’re not hearing traffic all night. The beds are comfortable (firmer side, if that matters to you), and honestly, the shower pressure was better than some places I’ve paid twice as much for.
What I really liked was how the staff seemed to know the area β not just the obvious tourist stuff, but where to grab good coffee that isn’t overpriced, which wineries are worth the drive, that sort of thing. The woman at reception mentioned this little bakery on Emerson Street that I never would’ve found otherwise. Small thing, but it makes a difference when you’re only in town for a few days. The whole place feels well-maintained without being stuffy β like someone actually cares about keeping it nice rather than just going through the motions. I stayed during shoulder season (late autumn), so it was pretty quiet, but I imagine it fills up during the Art Deco Weekend in February. You’d probably want to book ahead for that. The 4.5-star rating feels about right β it’s not luxury, but it’s solidly good at what it does, and that 8.6 rating from other guests makes sense. Sometimes you just want a clean, comfortable place to sleep that doesn’t cost a fortune and doesn’t feel like a chain hotel trying to be everything to everyone.

Well kept, clean and spacious unit. Well equiped kitchen area, lovely linen and a generous number of towels. Loved the two large comfy armchairs.

This was one of the cleanest and most beautiful smelling motels I have ever used. We had an accessible room on the ground floor.. and although not all modern (don't expect this in art deco duh) everything was immaculate. Good quality shower...
