Delamore Lodge Overview
You know those places that look almost too good to be true in photos? Well, Delamore Lodge is actually one of those rare spots that somehow exceeds what you’re expecting. I mean, when you’re winding down Delamore Drive toward Owhanake Bay – and honestly, the drive itself is half the experience with those views opening up – you start to get why this place consistently pulls ratings in the high 9s.
The thing about Waiheke Island is that everyone talks about the wineries (which, fair enough, they’re fantastic), but staying right on Owhanake Bay gives you this whole other perspective. The lodge sits perfectly positioned so you’re getting those sunrise views over the Hauraki Gulf, and I’m talking about the kind of sunrises that make you actually want to wake up early. The suites – because really, they’re more like sophisticated apartments than hotel rooms – have these floor-to-ceiling windows that frame everything like you’re living inside a postcard. What I really appreciated was the attention to details that actually matter: proper blackout options when you want to sleep in, and bathrooms with those deep soaking tubs where you can watch the water while you unwind.
The staff here gets the balance right between being attentive and giving you space to just… be. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no hovering or overly scripted welcome speeches – just genuine people who clearly know the island well and can point you toward the good stuff. Speaking of which, you’re about a 15-minute walk to some of Oneroa’s better restaurants (though honestly, with the lodge’s restaurant, you might not want to venture out every night). The kitchen here sources locally – and I mean really locally, not just marketing-speak locally – so you’re getting produce from island farms and seafood that was probably swimming in the gulf that morning. There’s something pretty satisfying about eating green-lipped mussels while looking out at the water they came from.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how quiet it manages to be despite being accessible. You’re not dealing with the chaos of Auckland city noise, but you’re also not stranded somewhere that requires a helicopter to reach civilization. The ferry terminal at Matiatia is maybe 10 minutes by car, and if you’re planning to explore the island’s vineyards – which, honestly, you should – most of the good ones are within a reasonable drive. Parking’s not an issue here either, which sounds minor until you’ve dealt with some of the cramped situations at other places around the gulf islands. The whole setup just works in a way that lets you focus on why you came to Waiheke in the first place: slowing down, eating well, and remembering what it feels like to wake up somewhere beautiful.
The finest healing hotels of the world feature renowned spa treatments, nutritional programs, and mindfulness practices that have attracted wellness seekers for generations.
