Dormy Inn Premium Kyoto Ekimae Natural Hot Spring Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Kyoto, and honestly? This place caught me off guard in the best way possible. The Dormy Inn Premium sits right there on Higashishiokoji-cho – you know, that busy street that runs parallel to the station – but somehow they’ve managed to create this little oasis that actually feels authentically Japanese without being touristy about it.
The real game-changer here is the natural hot spring on the top floor. I mean, when you first hear “hot spring” and “downtown Kyoto” in the same sentence, you’re probably thinking it’s some gimmicky rooftop tub, right? Wrong. They’ve tapped into actual onsen water, and soaking there at night with the city lights spread out below – well, it’s sort of magical in that understated Japanese way. The water has this slight mineral smell that reminds you it’s the real deal, not just heated tap water. Pro tip: go up around 10 PM when most of the day-trippers have cleared out.
What I really appreciate is how they’ve nailed the details without making a big show of it. The rooms aren’t huge – this is central Kyoto, after all – but everything feels deliberately placed. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in Japanese hotels), and there’s this subtle wood grain throughout that feels warm without being overwhelming. The bathrooms are compact but cleverly designed, with one of those deep Japanese tubs if you don’t feel like heading up to the communal onsen.
Here’s something you won’t read in the glossy brochures: the late-night ramen service they do around 9:30 PM. It’s complimentary, just sitting there in the lobby, and honestly it’s become part of my ritual when I stay here. Nothing fancy, but after a long day walking around Fushimi Inari or getting lost in Gion, that simple bowl hits different. The staff barely makes a fuss about it – very Japanese in that way.
Location-wise, you’re literally a three-minute walk from Kyoto Station, which sounds like it would be noisy chaos, but the building is set back just enough and well-insulated. I sleep fine, even though I’m usually sensitive to street noise. Plus, being this close to the station means you can actually use it as a proper base – day trips to Nara or Osaka are ridiculously easy, and you’ve got the subway right there for getting around the city.
The neighborhood itself is more business district than traditional Kyoto charm, sure, but that means there are actual locals around, not just tour groups. There’s a fantastic little standing bar called Tori Shin about two blocks east that serves the best yakitori I’ve found in the area – the kind of place you’d never find without wandering around a bit.
Look, this isn’t the ryokan experience with tatami mats and kaiseki dinners, but if you want modern comfort with genuine Japanese touches (and that hot spring really is special), this place delivers. The 8.6 rating feels about right – it’s really good at what it does, just don’t expect it to reinvent your idea of what a hotel should be.
Guest Reviews
The room, food, and onsen are all great, a very enjoyable trip. The location is very good, 5 minutes walk from JR Kyoto Station, the neighborhood is very convenient for shopping, shopping and traveling.
onsen, hours and massage. the treats were delightful
What could be improved: i could not pay for breakfast the next morning so ate across the street
I like many things about this hotel, the location is close to the train station, excellent onsen, our room and the common areas were clean. The staff was friendly but could be more knowledgeable of the area around the hotel.
Great location. We were able to get everywhere quickly from the train station. Nice atmosphere. Breakfast buffet had lots of options that worked for my picky child.
Onsen was brilliant
Onsen and ramen supper
What could be improved: Other locations had free drinks, but this location is a paid service. Not sure if there is a change in policy.
Location and proximity, very spacious room
Everything. Staff was very accommodating and courtesous
What could be improved: Nothing
Excellent location across the north exit of Kyoto Station. Room was very quiet even if the hotel is located on a major street. Staff is always very helpful. Love the onsen after a long day of walking around sightseeing. Would definitely recommend.
Very convenient to the train station.
