DoubleTree by Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the DoubleTree in Chatan – I mean, it’s a chain hotel, right? But this place actually surprised me. The location in Mihama is pretty perfect if you want to be where things are happening without dealing with the chaos of central Naha. You’re literally a two-minute walk from American Village, which sounds touristy but is actually where a lot of locals hang out too, especially in the evenings when the Ferris wheel lights up and the outdoor bars get busy.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel like a proper resort while still being, well, a DoubleTree. The lobby has this open, airy feel that captures those ocean breezes – and you know what, you can actually smell the salt air when you walk in, which never gets old. The rooms are solid, nothing revolutionary but they’re spacious by Japanese standards and the beds are legitimately comfortable (I’m picky about this). The pool area is where they really shine though – it’s got this relaxed vibe where you’ll see Japanese families mixing with American military folks and tourists, everyone just doing their own thing. Fair warning: it can get pretty lively on weekends, but honestly that’s part of the charm.

The beach access is the real winner here. Sure, it’s not the pristine white sand you’ll find up north in Motobu, but Sunset Beach is right there and it’s perfect for morning walks or just watching the planes come into Kadena (which sounds annoying but is actually kind of mesmerizing). The hotel sits right on the main drag through Mihama, so you’ve got convenience stores, decent restaurants, and that whole American Village complex within stumbling distance – literally, since there are some good bars over there. Parking was surprisingly easy, even during Golden Week when everything else was a nightmare. Check-in was smooth, staff spoke solid English, and they actually seemed to know the area well enough to give real recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots. The 8.8 rating makes sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it delivers exactly what you want from a beach resort without the pretension or the price tag of some of the fancier places down the coast.
