Edge of Heaven

You know what struck me first about Edge of Heaven? The name actually makes sense when you’re standing there. Perched up on Plantation Road – and I mean properly up there, not just some gentle slope – this place gives you that elevated feeling that Wanaka does so well. It’s about a 10-minute walk down into town, which honestly is perfect because you get the views without the tourist foot traffic right outside your window.

The thing about 3-star places in Wanaka is they can go either way – some feel like glorified motels, others punch way above their weight. Edge of Heaven definitely falls into that second category, and that 8.7 rating isn’t just people being generous. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully simple – clean lines, decent beds (actually comfortable, not just acceptable), and those big windows that remind you why you came to the South Island in the first place. The bathrooms are properly updated too, which you can’t always count on in smaller New Zealand towns. I mean, the shower pressure was better than my last Auckland hotel, if that tells you anything.

What really gets me about this spot is how it sits in the landscape. You’re high enough to see Lake Wanaka stretching out below, but you’re not so far up that getting to Roy’s Bay or the lakefront cafes becomes a mission. Parking’s easy – there’s actually space, unlike down on the main strips where you’re circling like a vulture during summer. The staff seem to get that people aren’t just passing through Wanaka; they’re here to decompress, maybe do some hiking, definitely spend time by that ridiculous lake. So check-in feels relaxed, not rushed, and they’ll actually tell you useful things like which tracks are worth your time versus the Instagram traps. Honestly, for the price point, you’re getting genuine Wanaka charm without the boutique hotel markup that’s taken over half the lakefront. It’s the kind of place that works whether you’re road-tripping the South Island or settling in for a proper Wanaka week.
