Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui

You know what, I’ve stayed at quite a few Maui resorts over the years, and Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui honestly surprised me in the best way possible. This five-star property in Wailea feels more like a collection of private villas than your typical hotel – and I mean that as the highest compliment. The all-suite concept here is brilliant because even their “standard” accommodations give you a proper living area and those marble bathrooms that make you feel ridiculously spoiled. What really got me though was stepping out onto my lanai that first morning and realizing I had this unobstructed view of Molokini Crater just sitting there in the distance like someone painted it on the horizon.

The location on Polo Beach is honestly perfect – you’re right on this gorgeous stretch of sand that somehow manages to feel secluded even though you’re at a major resort. I loved that I could walk down Wailea Alanui Drive and hit the shops at Wailea or grab dinner at one of the other resort restaurants, but the beach here never felt crowded (well, maybe avoid the prime afternoon hours if you want maximum zen). The hotel restaurant Nick’s Fishmarket is solid for a splurge dinner, though honestly some of my best meals were from the casual poolside spots. Speaking of the pool – that three-tier lagoon setup with the water slide actually works for adults too, don’t judge me. The keiki (kids) love it obviously, but there’s something about that lazy river section that just melts away your mainland stress.

Now let’s talk practicalities because that matters, right? Parking is complimentary which is a relief because some Wailea properties will absolutely gouge you there. The staff has this genuine aloha spirit that doesn’t feel forced – our room attendant Leilani remembered our names by day two and always left the most thoughtful touches. Check-in can get a bit hectic during peak season (I’m talking those January-March months when everyone’s escaping winter), so maybe grab a mai tai at the lobby bar while you wait. The spa is where I practically lived during my last day – that lomi lomi massage with the trade winds coming through the treatment room was pure magic. One tiny thing though – the resort can feel a bit spread out, so if you’re in one of the outer villas and forgot your sunscreen, it’s a bit of a trek back. But honestly, with those views of Haleakala in the morning light and the sound of waves right outside your door, I’d walk twice as far. This place gets an 8.8 rating and I totally see why – it’s that rare resort that manages to feel both luxurious and authentically Hawaiian.
