HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know that feeling when you pull up to a resort and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first drove down North Kaniku Drive to the Fairmont Orchid. The property sits right on the Mauna Lani coast, and honestly, the setting is just ridiculous – like someone took the most beautiful stretch of the Big Island’s Kohala Coast and decided to build a hotel that actually does it justice.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and genuinely Hawaiian at the same time. I mean, plenty of resorts on the Big Island throw around the local culture thing, but the Orchid actually pulls it off without feeling forced. The lobby opens right up to these incredible ocean views, and there’s always this gentle trade wind thing happening that makes the whole place feel alive. The pools (there are several) cascade down toward the beach, and I actually prefer the quieter upper pools if you’re trying to avoid the resort activity crowd. The beach itself is this gorgeous crescent of sand that’s protected enough for decent swimming – which, let’s be real, isn’t always a given on the Big Island’s rocky coastline.

What sold me completely though was the attention to details that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere for more than a quick Instagram stop. The rooms are spacious in that way where you can actually unpack and spread out, and most have these lanais that face either the ocean or the golf course (the Mauna Lani South Course is right there, by the way, if you’re into that). Check-in was smooth – no standing around forever while they “prepare your room,” and parking is straightforward, which sounds boring but trust me, you’ll appreciate it. The resort does get busy during peak season, especially around the pool areas in the afternoon, but early mornings and evenings have this perfect calm vibe where you can actually hear the waves. I’d honestly put this place up against any resort in Hawaii – the 8.8 rating makes total sense when you factor in the location, the genuine service, and the fact that you’re staying somewhere that feels special without trying too hard to prove it. If you’re doing the Big Island and want to splurge somewhere that’s worth it, this is your spot.

No charge for self parking was nice. Love the water bottles and refill stations around the resort. ALso found the pool staff helpful and enjoyed the chair covers and towel service.

The reef isn't necessarily the most colorfull and lively we've ever seen, but definitely still very beautiful to look at.
We're a bit adventurous, so we wanted to rent paddle bords, kayaks and surf boards to go out off the cove with, but that wasn't allowed without a guide. They could be utilised inside the cove.

Room: The room was very nice. Bathroom was great and there was a lot of closet space. The TV was an older model, so it wasn't possible to stream anything or cast to it, which didn't bother us, but definitely is notable if that is a requirement.

Food: We mainly ate at the breakfast buffet, which was quite varied. Enjoyed the fact that you could get freshly made omelets by a chef every morning.
Ate dinner at Browns looking at the sunset. The food was great and can definitely recommend that. The purple Ube bread, that they served was a highligt and the service was super good

Everything!! Loved the snorkeling, the staff, the gifts!!!! My birthday was so very special&unforgettable. Ohhhh the shampoo & conditioner was excellent & softened my dry hair.
