Fairway Cottages Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places around Rotorua, and Fairway Cottages honestly surprised me in the best way. When you first pull up along State Highway 5, it doesn’t scream “luxury” or anything – it’s more like stumbling onto this little pocket of calm that somehow escaped all the tourist chaos downtown. The cottages themselves are scattered around these well-kept grounds, and you know what struck me first? How quiet it actually gets here at night. I mean, you’re still close enough to everything (literally five minutes to Te Puia if you’re doing the geothermal thing), but once evening hits, it’s just you and maybe some tui birds doing their weird robot sounds in the morning.
The cottage I stayed in had this lived-in feeling that I really appreciated – not like someone had staged it for a photo shoot, but actually comfortable. Proper kitchen with a decent-sized fridge, which saved me from eating overpriced tourist food every meal. The beds are genuinely good too, and trust me, after a day of hiking around Whakarewarewa Forest or dealing with the sulfur smell downtown, you want a place where you can actually sleep. What really got me was the little details – decent water pressure in the shower (honestly rare around here), windows that actually open properly for that fresh air, and enough space to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. The heating works well too, which matters more than you’d think since Rotorua evenings can get pretty chilly even in summer.
The location is sort of perfect if you ask me – you’re on the main highway but set back enough that traffic isn’t an issue, and you can get to most of the good stuff without dealing with the parking nightmare around the lakefront. I walked to the Redwoods trailhead a couple times (maybe 15 minutes), and there’s a decent supermarket just down the road for supplies. The staff actually know the area too – not just the obvious tourist spots, but like where to get good coffee that isn’t $6 a cup, or which trails are less crowded. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, no weird hoops to jump through or hidden fees popping up. Honestly, with a 9.3 rating, I expected maybe some overhyped situation, but it really does deliver on being a solid, comfortable base for exploring without the inflated prices you get closer to the lake. If you’re the type who wants to experience Rotorua without feeling like you’re camping or paying resort prices for basic comfort, this place hits that sweet spot perfectly.

Very positive experience. The cottages are nicely furnished, cozy and very comfortable. Communication was excellent, the host responds almost immediately. The accommodation is located between a road and a golf course - personally, we weren’t bothered...
