What I didn’t expect was how quiet it gets at night – Tenmonkan can be pretty lively, but something about the building’s position shields you from most of the street noise.

One small thing that impressed me: the concierge actually knew the ferry schedules to Sakurajima off the top of her head and warned me about the weekend crowds at Sengan-en before I’d even mentioned wanting to go there. That kind of local knowledge makes a real difference when you’re trying to make the most of a short stay.
