Fergussons Motor Lodge

11 Peel Street, 4200 Waipukurau, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Fergussons Motor Lodge? It’s actually got character – and I mean that in the best way possible. Sitting right on Peel Street in Waipukurau, this place feels like what a proper New Zealand motor lodge should be, without trying too hard to be something it’s not. The moment you pull up, there’s this sense that someone actually cares about the details here. The grounds are tidy without being sterile, and honestly, the parking situation is a dream – you can literally park right outside your room, which is gold when you’re hauling luggage after a long drive through Central Hawke’s Bay.
What really won me over was how the staff treats you like you’re staying with locals who happen to know everything worth knowing about the area. They’ll tell you which café in town does the best flat white (spoiler: it’s not where the tourists go), and they’re spot-on about timing your drive to the coast – those winding roads to the beaches can be tricky if you’re not familiar with them. The rooms themselves have this comfortable, lived-in quality that’s way better than those cookie-cutter chain places. Sure, it’s not flashy, but everything works properly, the beds are actually comfortable, and the heating kicks in fast during those chilly Central Hawke’s Bay evenings. I particularly appreciated the little kitchenette setup – nothing fancy, but perfect for heating up some of those incredible pies from the local bakery or making a proper cup of tea without having to venture out.
What makes Fergussons special, though, is its position as your base camp for exploring this part of the country that most people just drive through on their way somewhere else. Big mistake, honestly. Waipukurau might look sleepy, but you’re perfectly positioned here – the Tuki Tuki River walks are gorgeous (especially in autumn), and you can reach some seriously underrated beaches within half an hour. The lodge feels like it belongs in this landscape, not like it was dropped here by some corporate chain. The 8.2 rating makes perfect sense once you’re here a day or two – it’s that sweet spot where everything just works without any fuss or pretension. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the walls aren’t exactly soundproof, so if you’re a light sleeper and there’s a family with energetic kids next door, you might hear them. But honestly, most guests seem to be pretty considerate, and by 9 PM it’s usually quiet as anything. If you’re looking for a genuine slice of rural New Zealand hospitality without the tourist markup, this is your spot.
