HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how the Four Seasons Hualalai would make me feel like I’d stumbled into someone’s impossibly wealthy uncle’s private estate. The moment you turn off Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway onto Ka’upulehu Drive, you know something’s different – the road winds through this almost lunar landscape of black lava rock, and then suddenly there’s this oasis of perfectly manicured palms and bougainvillea. Check-in happens in this open-air pavilion where they actually bring you cold towels and lilikoi juice while you’re still figuring out where to put your rental car keys. The whole property sprawls along this gorgeous stretch of coast where the Big Island’s Kona side shows off – you’re looking at these perfectly clear turquoise pools formed by ancient lava flows, and honestly, the hotel’s swimming areas blend so seamlessly with the natural tide pools that you’ll spend half your time trying to figure out where nature ends and the resort begins.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel both incredibly luxurious and genuinely Hawaiian at the same time. I mean, you’ve got your typical Four Seasons touches – those ridiculously comfortable beds, bathroom amenities that probably cost more than my monthly groceries – but then you’ll find yourself chatting with staff members who grew up on the island and actually know which beaches the locals hit when they want to avoid tourists (spoiler: it’s not the ones in your guidebook). The golf course here is something else entirely; Jack Nicklaus designed it to weave around actual archaeological sites, so you’re literally putting next to ancient Hawaiian stone platforms. The spa treatments incorporate traditional Hawaiian healing practices, and I watched them harvest sea salt from those same lava pools for the scrubs. You know what really surprised me though? How quiet everything stays, even when the resort’s at capacity – something about the way it’s laid out means you never feel crowded, and the only sounds are waves hitting the rocks and maybe some distant Hawaiian music drifting from the Beach Tree restaurant.

If you’re debating whether this place justifies the price tag (and let’s be real, it’s not cheap), here’s what sealed it for me: it’s one of those rare spots where you can snorkel with manta rays at nearby Keauhou Bay in the morning, then be back sipping craft cocktails made with locally-grown coffee beans by sunset. The concierge team doesn’t just book activities – they’ll hook you up with the kind of experiences that make you feel like you’ve got insider access to the island. I’m talking about private cultural tours, fishing charters with captains who’ve been working these waters for decades, or helicopter rides timed perfectly for golden hour over the volcanoes. Sure, you could probably find a decent beach resort for half the cost, but you won’t find this particular combination of authentic Hawaiian culture and that effortless Four Seasons polish anywhere else on the Big Island. It’s the kind of place that ruins you for other hotels, honestly.

We loved everything at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort on the Big Island: the staff, the golf course, the spa, the paddleboarding, poolside with yummy free treats, the hotel itself and the restaurants. Miller and Lux, Tyler Florence's restaurant was off seriously off the charts. We even were seated next to a well known celebrity and his wife which was fun to see, but we did not disturb them. Dinner at the Beach Tree with the Luau was outstanding. Dinner at Sushi and Robata was also excellent. 10 out of 10!
