Fujiya Hotel Overview
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of fancy places, but walking into the Fujiya Hotel lobby actually made me stop and just… look around for a minute. This isn’t some shiny new resort trying too hard – it’s been sitting in Miyanoshita since 1878, and honestly, it feels like it’s earned every single one of those years. The wood creaks in the right places, there’s this faint scent of tatami and mountain air that follows you around, and the staff moves with that quiet efficiency that only comes from decades of practice.
Here’s the thing about Hakone that most people don’t realize until they’re actually here – location is everything, and the Fujiya nailed it. While everyone else is cramming into Hakone-Yumoto or fighting crowds at Lake Ashi, you’re tucked away in this little pocket of old Japan where the only sounds are the mountain streams and maybe a train rumbling by in the distance. I mean, you’re still close enough to hit the major spots (the open-air museum is maybe ten minutes away, and you can catch the mountain railway right from Miyanoshita station), but it feels completely removed from all that tourist chaos. The hotel’s gardens kind of spill down the hillside, and there are these winding paths where you’ll find yourself completely alone even during peak season – which, let me tell you, is rare in Hakone these days.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to keep that authentic ryokan feeling while still being, well, a proper hotel. The rooms are this perfect mix of traditional Japanese aesthetics and actual comfort – you’re not sleeping on the floor unless you want to, but everything feels intentional and peaceful. The onsen here is smaller than some of the big resort operations, but that’s actually better because you’re not sharing it with fifty other people. And the food… honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from hotel dining, but their kaiseki dinner was one of those meals where you find yourself eating slower just to make it last longer. They source a lot of ingredients locally – the mountain vegetables especially – and you can taste the difference. Just don’t expect to eat dinner late; they’re pretty traditional about meal times, which I actually found refreshing after dealing with the chaos of Tokyo schedules. The whole experience feels like stepping back in time, but in the best possible way – like you’re getting a glimpse of what travel used to be like before everything became so rushed and standardized.
