Guest reviews: 9.3

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Nestled in the serene town of Yugawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, the four-star Fukiya Ryokan offers an authentic Japanese hospitality experience that has earned it an exceptional 9.3 rating from satisfied guests. This traditional Japanese inn, located at Miyakami 398 in Yugawara, Ashigarashimo, provides visitors with a perfect blend of cultural immersion and refined comfort. Situated in the picturesque hot spring resort area of Yugawara, the ryokan benefits from its proximity to the stunning natural landscapes of the Kanagawa region, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. The area is renowned for its therapeutic onsen (hot springs), lush mountains, and the beautiful coastline of Sagami Bay, creating an idyllic setting for this highly-acclaimed accommodation. Fukiya Ryokan distinguishes itself through its unwavering commitment to traditional Japanese aesthetics and exceptional service standards, reflected in its outstanding 9.3 rating. Guests can expect meticulously designed rooms featuring tatami mat flooring, sliding fusuma doors, and comfortable futon bedding that embodies the essence of Japanese minimalism and functionality. The ryokan likely offers guests the opportunity to experience an authentic kaiseki dinner—a multi-course Japanese feast featuring seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients prepared with artistic precision. The property almost certainly includes communal bathing facilities supplied by Yugawara’s famous hot springs, known for their healing mineral properties that have drawn visitors for centuries. The ryokan’s setting in Miyakami allows guests easy access to peaceful hiking trails through bamboo forests and mountains, traditional shrines and temples that dot the landscape, and seasonal attractions such as cherry blossoms in spring or vibrant autumn foliage. What truly sets Fukiya Ryokan apart, as evidenced by its near-perfect rating, is its adherence to the principles of omotenashi—the uniquely Japanese approach to hospitality that anticipates guests’ needs before they arise. Visitors consistently praise the attentive yet unobtrusive service, with staff members likely demonstrating the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. The ryokan probably offers thoughtful amenities such as yukata robes for guests to wear during their stay, traditional tea ceremonies, and possibly cultural activities like calligraphy or flower arrangement, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Japanese traditions. The tranquil atmosphere pervading the property makes it an ideal retreat for those seeking to escape the frenetic pace of urban Japan, with the soothing sounds of nature and deliberately designed spaces encouraging mindfulness and relaxation. Whether you’re a foreign traveler seeking an authentic Japanese experience or a local looking for a refined getaway, Fukiya Ryokan stands as a premier destination in Yugawara, combining timeless traditions with the comfort and amenities expected of a four-star establishment. Its consistent delivery of exceptional experiences, as reflected in its outstanding 9.3 rating, makes it a standout choice for discerning travelers exploring the natural and cultural treasures of Kanagawa Prefecture.

Location was quite and the view was nice

What could be improved: The outside bath was great but it would be better if the shower area was inside so it won't be so cold after the bath and the water flow is too weak

Fukiya Ryokan is a very special place and was the highlight of my trip to Japan. The staff went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and ensure I had plenty of onsen time at all the outside private onsen (due to my tattoo). They even let me use their public baths alone while they were closed to the public. The meals were extraordinary traditional Japanese feasts. The rooms were spacious and comfortable while still feeling authentically Japanese. It was well worth staying at slightly cheaper accommodation elsewhere in Japan to afford to have my one night at this Ryokan.

What could be improved: Slightly out of the way but still a good location

At this price point you would expect everything to be pretty much perfect, and it was. From arrival, you barely have to lift a finger, all you have to do is just decide when you would like your dinner and breakfast. from chk-in, the staff take great care of you, walk you through to your room while introducing the facilities, food is of good quality. the room was well maintained with your own little japanese garden. the private onsens were great, with view out to the nearby hills in autumn colours. due to the small scale of the ryokan, the shared onsens turned out to be pretty private too. loved the towels they provide, so much so i bought one to take home. most staff do not speak english, but they have some english briefing notes for foreign guests and most signs are in english/ japanese you don't really feel like you are missing out of on much.

What could be improved: when we used the private onsen on the roof the shower pressure was intermittent. but small blemish in an otherwise very authentic ryokan experience.

Superlative service from start to finish with beautiful interiors designed by Kengo Kuma. Meticulous attention was paid to the little details, which made the stay so much more pleasant.

The staff, in spite of the language barrier, made you feel comfortable and welcomed. Food was excellent and the kaiseki dinners brought you through the various types of Japanese cuisine (e.g. sukiyaki, yakiniku, shabu shabu). Breakfast was equally sumptuous and delicious.

The rooftop onsen baths, operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, offered a fine view of the town and the mountains beyond. The ground floor public baths, aesthetically designed with sensitive lighting, offered soothing waters for a morning and evening soak.

On the last day, staff checked in with me on the timing of my departure and ordered the taxi accordingly. The omiyage for me were all wrapped in the ryokan's emblematic design wrapping paper and very thoughtful comprising a tengui, a packet of green tea leaves and a box of freshly made onsen manju.

An overall stupendous experience over two nights.

What could be improved: Nothing in particular.

It was a really nice experience, the staff were super lovely, room was nice.

What could be improved: The only thing is you have to climb a little bit getting there, but only for a few minutes, not a big problem.

Quiet ryokan with beautiful facilities and friendly services. My room had a small but beautiful private garden. Dinner and breakfast were great, too! I highly recommend this ryokan.
