Fukiya Ryokan

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of ryokans across Japan, but Fukiya in Yugawara honestly caught me off guard in the best way possible. You know how sometimes you book a place because it looks decent online, then you show up and think “oh, this is actually something special”? That was my experience here. The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm – maybe it’s the way the wooden floors creak just slightly under your feet, or how the staff moves around with that unhurried precision that tells you they actually care about what they’re doing.

What really gets me about this place is how it sits in Miyakami – if you know Yugawara at all, you’ll appreciate that they’re tucked away from the main onsen strip where all the tour buses drop people off. I mean, don’t get me wrong, those bigger places have their charm, but there’s something to be said for being able to hear the actual river running nearby instead of just traffic. The walk from Yugawara Station takes about fifteen minutes (they’ll pick you up if you call ahead, which honestly saved my life with all my luggage), and you’re basically following the Chitose River upstream into this quieter residential area where locals actually live.

The onsen itself – and this is coming from someone who’s pretty picky about hot springs – uses water from their own source, not the communal municipal supply that a lot of places rely on. You can taste the difference, if that makes sense. It’s got this subtle mineral bite that tells you it’s the real deal. The outdoor bath faces these forested hills, and if you time it right in the early morning or just before dinner, you might catch sight of some of the local wildlife wandering down to drink. The indoor facilities are spotless without feeling sterile, which is harder to achieve than you’d think.

Their kaiseki dinner deserves a mention too – the chef sources a lot of ingredients from right here in the Hakone-Yugawara area, including these incredible wild vegetables that change with the seasons. I stayed in October and got this amazing preparation of local mushrooms that I’m still thinking about months later. The presentation is beautiful, sure, but more importantly, everything actually tastes like something. You know how sometimes fancy Japanese meals can feel a bit too precious? This felt more like someone’s grandmother decided to show off her best recipes.

The rooms themselves are traditional but not museum-piece traditional – they’ve got proper climate control (which you’ll appreciate in summer), decent WiFi, and the futon setup is actually comfortable for us taller foreigners. The walls aren’t paper-thin either, so you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway. Parking is free and right on-site, which is clutch if you’re driving up from Tokyo or exploring the Izu Peninsula.

Honestly, with a 9.3 rating, I was expecting it to be good, but Fukiya exceeded that in ways that matter for a real stay. It’s the kind of place where you end up extending your visit if you can, and where the staff remembers your name when you come back.

Location was quite and the view was nice

What could be improved: The outside bath was great but it would be better if the shower area was inside so it won't be so cold after the bath and the water flow is too weak

Fukiya Ryokan is a very special place and was the highlight of my trip to Japan. The staff went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and ensure I had plenty of onsen time at all the outside private onsen (due to my tattoo). They even let me use their public baths alone while they were closed to the public. The meals were extraordinary traditional Japanese feasts. The rooms were spacious and comfortable while still feeling authentically Japanese. It was well worth staying at slightly cheaper accommodation elsewhere in Japan to afford to have my one night at this Ryokan.

What could be improved: Slightly out of the way but still a good location

At this price point you would expect everything to be pretty much perfect, and it was. From arrival, you barely have to lift a finger, all you have to do is just decide when you would like your dinner and breakfast. from chk-in, the staff take great care of you, walk you through to your room while introducing the facilities, food is of good quality. the room was well maintained with your own little japanese garden. the private onsens were great, with view out to the nearby hills in autumn colours. due to the small scale of the ryokan, the shared onsens turned out to be pretty private too. loved the towels they provide, so much so i bought one to take home. most staff do not speak english, but they have some english briefing notes for foreign guests and most signs are in english/ japanese you don't really feel like you are missing out of on much.

What could be improved: when we used the private onsen on the roof the shower pressure was intermittent. but small blemish in an otherwise very authentic ryokan experience.

Superlative service from start to finish with beautiful interiors designed by Kengo Kuma. Meticulous attention was paid to the little details, which made the stay so much more pleasant.

The staff, in spite of the language barrier, made you feel comfortable and welcomed. Food was excellent and the kaiseki dinners brought you through the various types of Japanese cuisine (e.g. sukiyaki, yakiniku, shabu shabu). Breakfast was equally sumptuous and delicious.

The rooftop onsen baths, operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, offered a fine view of the town and the mountains beyond. The ground floor public baths, aesthetically designed with sensitive lighting, offered soothing waters for a morning and evening soak.

On the last day, staff checked in with me on the timing of my departure and ordered the taxi accordingly. The omiyage for me were all wrapped in the ryokan's emblematic design wrapping paper and very thoughtful comprising a tengui, a packet of green tea leaves and a box of freshly made onsen manju.

An overall stupendous experience over two nights.

What could be improved: Nothing in particular.

It was a really nice experience, the staff were super lovely, room was nice.

What could be improved: The only thing is you have to climb a little bit getting there, but only for a few minutes, not a big problem.

Quiet ryokan with beautiful facilities and friendly services. My room had a small but beautiful private garden. Dinner and breakfast were great, too! I highly recommend this ryokan.
