HOTEL OVERVIEW

Nestled in the picturesque hot spring town of Ikaho, the exquisite 4-star Fukuichi hotel offers an authentic Japanese retreat that blends traditional hospitality with modern comfort. Located at Ikaho Kouto 5-4 in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, this distinguished establishment has earned an impressive 8.3 rating from satisfied guests, a testament to its exceptional service and amenities. Positioned in the heart of one of Japan’s most celebrated onsen (hot spring) regions, Fukuichi provides the perfect base for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Japan’s rich bathing culture while exploring the natural beauty of Gunma Prefecture. Fukuichi stands as a gateway to the historic Ikaho Onsen area, famous for its distinctive “golden” waters rich in iron and minerals that have been soothing visitors for over 400 years. The hotel’s strategic location on Ikaho’s stone steps (Ishidan-gai) allows guests easy access to this charming traditional thoroughfare lined with souvenir shops, local eateries, and public bath houses. From this elevated position, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Kanto Plain stretching out below. The surrounding area offers numerous attractions including Mount Haruna, one of Japan’s most beautiful volcanic landscapes, and Mizusawa Temple, known for its historical significance and delicious Mizusawa udon noodles. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to Ikaho Green Bokujo, a family-friendly farm park, and the serene Lake Haruna, perfect for seasonal outdoor activities. The well-reviewed Fukuichi embraces the Japanese concept of “omotenashi” (wholehearted hospitality), where every detail is thoughtfully considered to ensure guests’ comfort and satisfaction. Traditional tatami rooms, many featuring private open-air baths, offer an authentic ryokan experience while maintaining modern conveniences. The hotel’s communal hot spring baths are a highlight, drawing directly from Ikaho’s famous mineral-rich springs that are said to benefit everything from skin conditions to rheumatism. Culinary experiences at Fukuichi showcase the region’s seasonal bounty, with kaiseki (multi-course) dinners featuring local specialties such as Gunma’s prized wagyu beef and fresh mountain vegetables. Served in private dining areas or in guest rooms on low tables, these meticulously prepared meals are as visually stunning as they are delicious. With its perfect balance of traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary comforts, all wrapped in the therapeutic embrace of natural hot springs, Fukuichi provides an immersive cultural experience that captures the essence of Japanese hospitality in one of the country’s most beloved onsen destinations. Whether seeking rejuvenation in therapeutic waters, cultural enrichment in historic surroundings, or culinary adventures featuring regional delicacies, discerning travelers will find Fukuichi an ideal choice for experiencing the authentic charm of rural Japan.

Stayed in Japanese style room, it was beyond our expectations. Room layout was amazing and the view we had was spectacular. Was fun to experience sleeping on Tatami floors on futon, and we had a major bonus with thunderstorms and rain both nights of our stay. What could be improved: The hotel feel and style were very fancy, well above the standard...

Stayed in Japanese style room, it was beyond our expectations. Room layout was amazing and the view we had was spectacular. Was fun to experience sleeping on Tatami floors on futon, and we had a major bonus with thunderstorms and rain both nights of our stay.

What could be improved: The hotel feel and style were very fancy, well above the standard that we're used to. Not many of the staff could speak or understand english and we felt very overwhelmed and like outliers when comparing to the other guests. Definitely a more top tier hotel, not sure it suits those on a tighter budget or those with little Japanese language skills. We also struggled to make dinner reservations and couldn't muster the courage to use the Onsen as we felt so out of place. The hotel exceeded our expectations in all the wrong ways, just in the way of not being a foreigner friendly and very traditional style property.

Very clean and spacious onsen.

The Sauna was also very good and pleasant

Excellent Dinner and great variety for breakfast

Superb location

What could be improved: Maintenance of the “Ruhe” could be better. Cups and water in the coffee machine often missing, so no espresso for us for an entire day.

Breakfast in the hall was wonderful. The selection of foods was extensive, and delicious. The staff were exceptional.

What could be improved: There are absolutely no improvements that I could suggest to improve this experience.
