Fukuichi Overview

You know what really struck me about Fukuichi when I first walked in? It’s got this perfect balance between traditional ryokan charm and actual comfort – and I mean that in the best way possible. The place sits right in the heart of Ikaho Onsen, which honestly is one of those hot spring towns that could easily feel touristy, but Fukuichi manages to feel authentic. The lobby has these beautiful wooden beams and tatami details that make you slow down the moment you step inside, which is exactly what you want after the drive up those winding mountain roads from Shibukawa.

The location is actually pretty brilliant if you know Ikaho at all. You’re literally steps from the famous stone steps (Ishidan-gai) – you know, those 365 granite steps that everyone talks about – but far enough away that you don’t get the constant foot traffic noise. I stayed there during autumn when the maples were going crazy with color, and honestly, the view from some of the rooms toward Mount Haruna was incredible. The onsen baths are the real deal too – they use the famous “golden hot spring” water that Ikaho is known for, and there’s something about soaking in those mineral-rich waters while looking out at the mountains that just… well, it works. The indoor and outdoor baths are both spacious, and I appreciated that they weren’t packed even during peak season (though I’d still recommend the early morning soak around 6 AM if you want them mostly to yourself).

What really sets Fukuichi apart though – and this might sound small but it matters – is how the staff actually seems to enjoy working there. Check-in was smooth, they helped me figure out the local bus schedule without me even asking, and the woman at the front desk gave me this insider tip about the best time to hit the stone steps for photos (early evening, golden hour, fewer crowds). The kaiseki dinner was solid traditional fare, nothing groundbreaking but executed really well, and they were flexible about dietary restrictions when I mentioned I don’t eat raw fish. The rooms themselves are that nice mix of traditional and practical – tatami mats and futon bedding, but also proper climate control and surprisingly good WiFi. Parking is free and right on-site, which is huge because finding parking in Ikaho can be a nightmare, especially on weekends. My only minor gripe? The walls are a bit thin, so you might hear your neighbors if they’re early risers, but honestly that’s pretty standard for this style of accommodation. For the price point and the 8.3 rating it’s earned, Fukuichi delivers exactly what you’d hope for in a quality onsen experience without any of the pretension you sometimes get at the higher-end places.

Stayed in Japanese style room, it was beyond our expectations. Room layout was amazing and the view we had was spectacular. Was fun to experience sleeping on Tatami floors on futon, and we had a major bonus with thunderstorms and rain both nights of our stay.

What could be improved: The hotel feel and style were very fancy, well above the standard that we're used to. Not many of the staff could speak or understand english and we felt very overwhelmed and like outliers when comparing to the other guests. Definitely a more top tier hotel, not sure it suits those on a tighter budget or those with little Japanese language skills. We also struggled to make dinner reservations and couldn't muster the courage to use the Onsen as we felt so out of place. The hotel exceeded our expectations in all the wrong ways, just in the way of not being a foreigner friendly and very traditional style property.

Superb location

What could be improved: Maintenance of the “Ruhe” could be better. Cups and water in the coffee machine often missing, so no espresso for us for an entire day.
