Futsukaichi Hot Spring – Daimaru Besso

HOTEL OVERVIEW

So here’s the thing about Daimaru Besso – it’s one of those places that actually lives up to its five-star reputation, which honestly surprised me a bit. I mean, you see these traditional ryokan-style hotels all over Kyushu, but this one in Futsukaichi really gets the balance right between authentic Japanese hospitality and the kind of comfort that makes you want to extend your stay.

The location is pretty perfect if you know the area. Futsukaichi isn’t some touristy hot spring town that’s crawling with tour buses – it’s more like where locals from Fukuoka city come when they want to actually relax. You’re about 30 minutes from central Fukuoka by train, but you feel like you’re in a completely different world. The onsen here taps into the same natural springs that have been drawing people for over a thousand years, and you can actually taste the difference in the mineral-rich water. What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that intimate ryokan feel even though it’s a fairly large property. The staff remembers your name after one night, and they seem to genuinely care about whether you’re enjoying yourself – not in that forced hospitality way, but like they’re actually proud of the place.

The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, with proper tatami areas and those deep wooden soaking tubs that make the communal baths almost redundant (though you’d be crazy not to try the outdoor onsen, especially in the evening when the gardens are lit up). I stayed during cherry blossom season and honestly, waking up to that view was worth the premium rate. The kaiseki dinners are the real deal too – not some simplified version for foreign guests, but proper seasonal courses that change based on what’s fresh. You know what surprised me most though? The breakfast. They do both traditional Japanese and Western options, and both are exceptional. The parking situation is stress-free, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to navigate narrow streets with a rental car. Check-in was smooth even with my terrible Japanese, and they had someone who spoke excellent English without making me feel like I needed a translator for everything. It gets busy during golden week and the autumn foliage season, so book early if you’re planning around those times. But honestly, even when it’s full, the place never feels crowded or rushed.

This ryokan is an unexpected oasis in a busy area near ish airport, feels so far away from the 4 lane road next to it. We loved our traditional, very quiet, huge room. Overlooked an area with trees. The garden is lovely. The hospitality is excellent, the staff are very accommodating, we wish we stayed more than 1 night. What could be improved:...

we were pleasantly surprised about our room. It was spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the huge public hot bath.

What could be improved: the in-room hot bath could be improved a bit. We like the idea of having a window open for an open-air feeeling

All staff provided excellent service. One of the front desk staff is a Chinese, who can speak both Chinese and Japanese. He was very helpful. He offered us his mobile contact to ensure we could safely get a taxi back to the hotel from the outlet nearby. Exceed our expectations. Thank you so much.

The staff. Even not knowing our language, they make the effort in helping us. Attention to detail and the breakfast was supperd.

What could be improved: Location. We were aware that was tricky to get there. The location is not essy accesible by public transit. However, we managed to take a bus from JR Station and walked for 5 min.

Clean and kept the over a century old atmosphere

What could be improved: None really maybe just add signs and directions. You could easily get disoriented walking the hallways

The room was spacious and comfortable. Food was delicious. Service was relaxed and friendly. The garden is incredible. The hot spring bath was so relaxing and well kept up.

What could be improved: The location was a bit far from Hakata and it was harder to get to than I expected.

I enjoyed my stay here. This is a good Ryokan. The room was very big and nice (but as a solo traveler I had to pay for a two-person room rate, so a little expensive). I enjoyed my stay here. This is a good Ryokan. The room was very big and nice (but as a solo traveler I had to pay for a two-person room rate, so a little expensive). The futons were among, if not the most comfortable I slept on during my trip to Japan. The food was excellent, I enjoyed my meals, but I could have eaten a bit more food, some portions seemed small. The hot springs bath was very nice with a unique smooth loose "river rock" on the bottom of the bath. The Japanese garden is excellent, please take a stroll. The most amazing thing about this ryokan it that although it is next to a couple of extremely busy roads/ major highway and surrounded by tall city buildings it is still quiet and feels secluded and has a peaceful old Japan feeling. I would recommend this ryokan.

What could be improved: It was a little hard to find at night. There was a little creature running around in the vents when I was trying to sleep. I hope it wasn't a rat. I am probably a prude, but I didn't care for the naked statues in lounge and (frontal) naked lady pictures in the bath.

I loved the room. It was so spacious. The shower/bath wasn’t the best, the pressure was weird and sprayed everywhere in the room at times. But the breakfast included was delicious and the staff were very friendly. What could be improved: I knew it was would be far from the city of Hakata but I didn’t realize how far the station was from our hotel...

What could be improved: I knew it was would be far from the city of Hakata but I didn’t realize how far the station was from our hotel which was unfortunate. I also didn’t realize if you had tattoos you could not go in the onsen, so I was unable to enjoy that to my dismay.
