You know what struck me first about Galleria Midobaru? It’s tucked away in this quiet residential pocket of Beppu that most tourists never find – which is honestly part of its charm. When I pulled up to the place, I mean, you’re not getting the flashy hotel entrance you might expect, but there’s something really appealing about how it just fits into the neighborhood on Horita 6kumi. The whole area has this lived-in feel where you’ll see locals going about their day, not just tour groups shuffling around.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels Japanese in a way that a lot of the bigger hotels in central Beppu don’t. The staff – and I’m talking about everyone from the front desk to housekeeping – they have this genuine warmth that you can’t fake. Check-in was smooth (they spoke decent English, which helps), but what really got me was how they knew the local hot springs scene inside and out. They didn’t just hand me a generic map; they asked what kind of onsen experience I was after and gave me specific recommendations based on that. Turns out there are these smaller, family-run baths within walking distance that I never would’ve found otherwise.

The rooms themselves are well, they’re not huge by Western standards, but they’re thoughtfully designed. Everything feels quality without being stuffy – good linens, actually comfortable beds, and the bathrooms are surprisingly spacious. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re not isolated from everything. You’ll hear the occasional sound from the neighborhood (kids playing, someone’s TV), but it’s that normal life background noise that actually made me feel more connected to the place. Parking was easy too, which if you’re driving around Kyushu like I was, that’s not always a given. The 9.0 rating makes total sense to me – it’s the kind of place where every little detail works the way it should, and the few tiny quirks (like the elevator being a bit slow) just add character rather than frustration.
