Their breakfast spread is proper good too, with local honey and what I’m pretty sure was homemade granola, though I forgot to ask. The rooms are spotless without being sterile, if that makes sense – comfortable beds, powerful showers, and those little touches like decent coffee in the room that show someone’s actually thinking about what travelers need.

What really sold me was how they handle the whole Rotorua sulfur smell situation. Look, anyone who tells you they can completely escape the geothermal aroma in this town is lying, but somehow Gemini Lodge manages to stay remarkably fresh inside. I suspect it’s something to do with their ventilation system, but honestly, I was just grateful not to wake up thinking someone had left eggs out overnight. The staff seem genuinely happy to be there too – not that forced hospitality smile you get at chain hotels, but actual conversations about the area. They pointed me toward this fantastic walking track along Lake Rotorua that starts just off Ranolf Street, which I never would’ve found otherwise. Parking’s easy (free, right on site), check-in was smooth, and the WiFi actually works properly throughout the building. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why Rotorua has such a loyal following among Kiwis who come back year after year – genuine hospitality without the fuss, perfectly positioned to explore everything the region offers.
