Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa

1820 State Highway, 9371 Queenstown, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, when you first pull up to Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa on State Highway 6, you might wonder if you took a wrong turn somewhere – it’s tucked into this gorgeous valley about 20 minutes out from Queenstown’s chaos, surrounded by vineyards and mountains that make you immediately understand why they call this Central Otago wine country. The building itself has this understated elegance thing going on, sort of like someone with really good taste decided to build their dream home but make it big enough to share.
What actually sets this place apart (and justifies that 5-star rating, I mean, a 9.1 is pretty impressive) is how they’ve managed to feel both luxurious and genuinely relaxing at the same time. The spa is phenomenal – they use local ingredients in their treatments, and honestly, after a day of wine tasting at Chard Farm or Peregrine just down the road, you’ll want that massage. The rooms are spacious with these massive windows that frame the Remarkables mountain range, and the beds… well, let’s just say checkout feels cruel. You know what’s nice? The place never feels crowded, even during peak summer season, because they’ve kept the room count reasonable.
The restaurant sources a lot from local producers – which makes sense since you’re literally in wine and farming country – and their sommelier actually knows the winemakers personally, so you’ll get stories with your Pinot Noir. Parking’s easy (always a relief after navigating Queenstown’s streets), and they’re super helpful about organizing activities. Whether you want to hit the Gibbston Valley Winery cellar door that’s practically next door, or venture out to the Kawarau Gorge for some bungy jumping, they’ve got the local connections. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re planning to walk into Queenstown for dinner, well… you can’t. You’ll need a car or their shuttle service. But honestly, once you’re settled in with a glass of local Pinot and watching the evening light hit those mountains, leaving feels like the last thing you’d want to do anyway.

Room feels new, everything was just as we dreamt it will be! We used the hot tub as well, as you got 2 in different 'locations' (private space between them) There was complementary wine tasting that was short and on point. We tasted very good wines! Thank you! What could be improved: We felt the booking for the hot tub is too much of hotel-ish but...

Just a lovely resort - great staff.
What could be improved: You definitely hear the road from your room although the view over the vines is very special. The welcome wine tasting was hosted by Zac who really wasn't good.

Designed. A lovely quiet break
